Venus 12 or Zalman CNPS7000A-Cu for A64 3400+??

What is everyone's experience with these fans?

Which is more quiet and which one cools better?

I'm looking for something to cool an A64 3400+ Newcastle. I may do some overclocking.

i have the 7000a Cu, the thing is heavy. much more than what i has expected. but i put mine on anyways and my temp is in the low 30's idle and about 40 at load. with is with a 3200+ @2.4 ghz.

The Zalman is better but i think you have to take out the mobo. If you dont want to take out the mobo than get the venus12

I never had to take off the mobo w/ my zalman. Its really easy. At least it was on my Chaintech VNF3-250. Can't speak to other mobos for lack of direct experience.

Well, when I said I wanted to cool an A64 3400+ maybe I should have clarified that this is going to be a fresh build from scratch, so the motherboard's already out.

I have a Venus 12 on my FX-53, and quite frankly im not that impressed. With the latest Bios update on my Neo2 idle temp is at 37 with max load at 51. Granted this is with the fan at about 4600, so its not maxed out, but its still pretty darned loud at this setting. I'm not sure how the zalman compares, but either way, I'd say do yourself a favor and get a XP-90 or 120. I myslef am switching to a 120 soon. Darn near silent with the right fan, and better cooling.

Gigahurtz, it's funny that you recommend the XP-90 and XP-120, because right after I started this thread I started doing more HSF research and found those two to be very worthy candidates as well.

I had a Thermaltake Volcano 7 in my current system until recently. I'm not sure how it did as far as cooling but from Day 1 the thing was loud as hell. I mean it used to screech/whine every so often and it made me crazy. Finally, I just switched it out with the stock fan that came with my XP1800+ and my PC has been quiet ever since. So, I think I'll pass on the Thermaltake.

From what I've read so far, the XP-90 and the Zalman seem to be equivalent as far as cooling. I guess it depends on what fan you use with the XP-90 that will determine the noise level.

The XP-120 seems to be getting very high reviews. I am either going to get the new DFI UT Lan Party mobo or an MSI K8N Neo Platinum. So far, users are saying that the XP-120 does a great job of cooling.

Which 120mm fan are you going to use with your XP-120? If I do go with either the XP-90 or 120, choosing the right fan will be my next dilemna....

I hear Globe fans do a great job cooling and are very quiet. Not easy to find, though.

The XP-120 is the best hs you can buy right now. I would recommend the Globe fan you mentioned or alternatively a 120mm Panaflo or maybe the best option a Papst 4412 F2/GL but Papsts are quite expensive in the US.
Check out the forums at Silentpcreview.com, there's lots of info on 120mm fans in there.

I have the Zalman 7000B-AlCu. I chose the AlCu version instead of pure copper since its cooling capacity is pretty much the same but it's clearly lighter. I'm using it @ 1800 rpm - I find it a perfect compromise between silence and cooling. At this speed, my CPU (A64 3200+ @ 2.4 GHz) idles at ca. 30C and reaches around 45C under load. I absolutely recommend the Zalman. I considered Thermaltake SilentBoost K8 and Gigabyte 3D Cooler Ultra GT but I'm glad I chose Zalman 7000.

Edit: wow, the Venus flat out sucks then 😉 The difference between Zalman and high efficiency Tt or Gigabyte coolers seems to be obvious - the latter can reach Zalman's performance but nowehere near Zalman's rpm rates - which makes them very loud at their 4k+ rpms, and thus, inferior IMHO.
