Here goes:

I watched The Wedding Planner with my girlfriend years ago. Matthew McConaughey has a line in there where he says, while eating M&Ms, "I only eat the brown ones, because they contain less artificial coloring," as he throws all the colored ones on the ground.

AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

.....

M&Ms are chocolate, coated in a hard candy shell. The shell is not chocolate at all. It is a candy shell. Mostly likely bleached. So, the brown one would not have less artificial coloring at all. If my knowledge of dye is correct, the brown one would have the MOST artificial coloring since it would take more dye to make it the darkest.

am I right? am I wrong?

I don't care, i feel better. This has been festering for years, and I havent been able to find a chance to say it in a conversation.

Thank you AT.

Depends on how you define artificial.
It's probably easier to get a natural brown than a natural red, yellow, blue etc.
Usually (in the UK at least) artificial colours are listed on the ingredients, so you can check which colours might be natural and which might be artificial.

bought a pack of peanut M&Ms.

color order:
blue 1 lake, yellow 6, red 40 lake, yellow 5, red 40, blue 1, blue 2 lake, yellow 6 lake, yellow 4 Lake

no brown listed. so the brown would be a mix, where the blue would be straight blue.

might not be more, but it definitely isn't less.

And if it was a joke - it wasn't funny.

yeah, bleached, as in color removed.

Assumed that the chocolate is coated in a white candy shell, then the color is sprayed on.

why the wtf?

you are probably right
but it doesn't matter
it is just a movie
and anyway the amount of coloring in a few m&m's is negligable

What about this line I read somewhere in AT (most likely L&R, could have been OT):

"The price of an engagement ring should cost you about 3 or 4 months pay"

Made me lol...and then cry.

Things can be white without being bleached. Snow isn't white because of bleach in the sky. Salt isn't white because they bleach it. To my knowledge, sugar isn't white because it's bleached. And hell, I have some unbleached flour here that's still fairly white.
It's probably just a naturally white mixture of sugar and something else, coated with coloring.
There'd be no sense bleaching it anyway, since the consumer generally will only see the colored coating.

the wtf is because spraying any kind of bleach on a candy is a ridiculous idea. you dont have to remove color (which most bleaches do via oxidation) to add the color to the candy, it doesnt soak in, the color is added to a mixture then the chocolates are coated in it.

id assume that the candy shell is colored before the chocolate gets coated far sooner than i would assume that the candy shell is put on, the candies are bleached (of all things, christ, its candy, not hair), then the candies are sprayed with color.

according to this: Text , im off a bit. chocolates are coated with candy, *then* coated with colored syrup.
