Ventilation holes needed behind motherboard?

I noticed that a lot of cases out that have ventilation holes on the side behind the motherboard. Mine does not. Does anyone know if this is really neccessary, how hot does the motherboard actually get and do ventilation holes on the case behind board help at all?

and if you add them, you'll likely make your system louder by giving it more places for sound to escape.
