I'm curious about setting up a Vent or Teamspeak server for a small WoW guild (no more than 10 people on at once).

My current home network is pretty basic - Road Runner cable modem to a wireless router, with my desktop and my wife's laptop connected wirelessly. The server would be an extra desktop connected via Cat5 to the WiFi router, tucked away in the office closet.

I read this link, and it sounds like a DNS service would take care of the dynamic IP, which was my primary concern. Are there any other reasons why I wouldn't be able to pull this off? I've been itching for a computer-related project, and getting this set up would definately scratch that itch.

Why not just buy one? You can get a 10-man vent for like $5 a month...hell some are even free.

Either way, its very possible. You could sign up for a DNS service, or just give out your cable modem ip as they dont change that often. Setup port forwarding on your router for port 3784 to the computer running the server, configure the firewall as necessary and you should be golden...

i couldnt comment on the quality, but I don't think you could support 10 people without any problems...itll probobly crappy quality and latency...

PS - WoW is gay and so are you for playing it :)

To be honest with you I'm not sure how well it will run, if at all, depending on the speed of your upload. How fast is your connection and does your ISP allow servers?

Great way to explain how you feel about a person because of a game. :disgust:

Road Runner doesn't advertise the upload speed, only the download speed (in my case 7Mbps). My guess is that it's 512K.

It won't cost me a thing in the world to try out, since the computer is currently collecting dust in my garage. There would be some other benefits to it as well, primarily getting my PC off of file / print server duty for my wife's laptop.
