VENT: my cable service

Forgive me, it has been 9 days since my last DHCP lease. My cable went out (just internet, don't have cable tv) the morning of March 18th. I called Cox about it and they said there was no known outage, but they would reprovision my modem and see if that worked. It didn't, so they said they'd have a tech look into it. I call again and they suspect my modem could be dead, so I head to a friend's place and try my modem there. The online light comes on fine, so I call back and they now see an outage, but they can't pull up any information on the node, so they tell me to call back tomorrow if it's not fixed in the morning.

I call back the 19th and get the same scripted procedures, then they agree to send someone out on Saturday. The guy comes and checks things out, walks outside, inside, outside, inside. Finally he's talking about the line being shot and it would have to be replaced. He says the old one went out before the new one went in, but that they would have someone out on Tuesday to replace it. Grrrr....

Monday morning comes and a Cox guy rings my doorbell and says he's measuring for the new line and then Miss Utility will come to paint, then they can install the new line in a week. :Q I call Cox again and explain I was told it would be fixed on Tuesday. They say that it's usually only 3-4 days and that it will be up by the end of the week. So it's Friday... I go home for lunch around 4:30 to find my cable still dead. I call Cox again about the outage and they tell me that the workorder is supposed to be filled by April 6th! :Q:| I flip out and ask why the dates keep changing and why I am being strung along like this. His manager is not available (how convenient) but he puts me on hold and then comes back to tell me he has left messages and emails with the contractor that is installing the line. I get transferred to customer service and they finally explain that the line was repaired back in November and now it has failed completely and needs a complete replacement which involves digging. This makes me feel somewhat better in that it isn't so simple to replace since they have to get permits from the county to dig. He also explains that the 6th is the latest it will be completed since that's when the permit to dig expires. Still, I am going to be without an internet connection @ home for a while longer. :| I'm fortunate enough to have a job that lets me browse most of the web from work, but IRC, AIM, etc. aren't available, much less UT2k4 which I JUST received prior to the outage. :|

DSL is looking better and better, but only 128/1.5 for $40 768/1.5 for $65/mo, or 768/3.0 for $99/mo. Cable is $55 for 256/3.0, which is just right.

No better DSL? Thoose DSL rates seem really high here... SBC offers 3.0/384 for 39.99 a month and they give you free modem + $99 credit on bill.... basically free modem and 2 1/2 months free.

I've spoken with one manager earlier in the week (forgot to put that in there) but she said they don't give credits for inconvenience, only the prorated amount for the days you do not have service. I managed to bring the screws down on the rep today enough to get an extra $10, but that's still outrageous.

I am planning to have internet cable. After I read your post, not sure about it. Cox will be the provider in my area.

If there is better DSL here, I'm not aware of it. Those rates were from Covad, which I found on BroadbandReports.com. Earthlink offers satellite, which I don't want. I'm 12095 ft. from the telco, FWIW.

Speakeasy offers 144/144 IDSL for $90/mo

It's fast as hell and latency is low. It's only $55/mo for me because I don't have cable tv. It'd be $40 otherwise. I had about a week's worth of downtime in October when they were upgrading the lines to 256/3.0, but it's been solid other than that. It just frustrates me to no end that it takes weeks for them to rerun a damn line.

I got 1500/384 DSL connection and I pay $59.95 /month. There is not many choices for highspeed in my small town. Only other two options is wireless and Sat. which is not very good here. So I went with dsl connection since it's the best choice here. Cable internet is not here yet at the last time I asked them about it.

On the good side even with my connection costing that much. They do offer unlimited download's/upload's. Which means I can download and upload all I want without problems. :p

I have no limits on bandwidth, and Cox has a great newsgroup service that I always pull 180k/sec from.

Adelphia was the bane of many people's cable existance at school until NTC came into town, which has its own set of problems.

If highspeed cable does become available here. It would be though the company 'Adelphia'. It's just not available here yet all though it's been a little while since I checked.

COX is horrible here (College Station, TX) and verizon dsl isnt great but alot better than COX. Cox has a severly small amount of nodes here and being a college town spells doom for anybody in an apartment complex (I have a house but its still slow as all hell unless your on at 6 AM and then you might get your reported speeds)... where atleast verizon is a dedicated speed all the time which Ive gotten about 99% of the time.

Ah yes, college towns and internet service... NTC was bad for that reason, but not as bad as the apartment I moved out of before getting NTC. They had ONE T1 for over 400 college students... right in the middle of Napster's heyday. 25% packetloss everywhere and not one ping below 100.

COX HSI is awesome here in Tucson. A mechanical failure on teh cable is not really a sign of bad service. It's just tough luck.
Go with COX.

I'm back up with a temporary fix. Apparently they cut the feeder line to the new vault (way to go!) and they have to have a crew repair it. They temporarily ran a coax line from the adjacent vault to the one servicing my house (and my neighbors). I can't see this lasting long, as people have to drive over it several times a day.

Nevertheless, my domain's home graphic has never been more appropriate.
