venice or winchester?

I've decided to get a A64 3200 socket 939 and oc it
I noticed on newegg the Winchester core is $40 more than the Venice
I was wondering which will give me the best performance (speed, oc, etc.)?
And if the Winchester does is it worth an extra $40?

Thx

The venice is the newer core, wich added the SSE3 instruction set. Get the venice. or wait for an Opteron 144.

The retail 144/146 Opteron from Tankguys.biz for $145/$160 is the best value/performance you will find in a single core cpu. Too bad they are not in stock yet...

San Diego E4 core with 1MB L2, high OC....

m 🙂

There is no reason to get the Winchester core if the Venice core is the same price or cheaper. Venice is a newer revision of the Athlon 64 core than Winchester with updates and tweaks.

Best for now = Venice.

Best 10 months ago = Winchester

Best when available = Opteron (San Diego)

If you can hold on for another couple weeks then the s939 Opteron chips will be best. However if you have itchy fingers then you can't go far wrong with a Venice.

The Venice core. There is absolutely zero reason to even consider the Winchester core. The Venice supports SSE3 instructions (Winch doesn't) and a few other optimizations I can't recall at the moment. Venice has a lower base VCore (1.35V). The Venice has been shown to be a more reliable overclocker (2.7GHz +). Even if the Winchester was a few dollars less than the Venice I still could not recommend it.

The only reason the Winchester is more is because AMD has stopped making that core, so the supply is very small where as the Venice supply is strong.

Most retailers adjust their prices by their inventory. Lots of a particular item means prices drop. Only a few items left, price increases even if it's outdated.

Same reason SDRAM prices are so high.

Who the heck voted for Winchester 😕

Venice would be my second choice though.
Opteron FTW! 🙂

Yeah, I'm with Mucker. These opty's look real hot. A fair chance of getting a real OCer for a low price.

Bad Dude, the s939 Opterons should work in any s939 board. Should.

I'd say get an Opteron 144 instead of any Venice or Winchester core. They are great overclockers.
