i'm going to be buying an amd single core 3800+ and it can have either core, venice and newcastle. Which is better for gaming? (if you want to know i'm waiting for the uli 1695 chipset to get on a retail board)

Venice will be better. Newcastle is on the old 130 nm process. It will consume more power and run hotter.
The venice wont perform that much better at the stock speeds, but you should be able to get a higher overclock.

get Venice!!!!!!!

Damn good Ocers...Venice A64 3000+ can do about 2.6Ghz on air without much problems...I have even seen some 3000+ 2.9Ghz Venices
most of all Venice support SSE3

Any reason you are going with a 3800+ ?

You'd be better off with a 3700+ San Diego if you're going that far.

At any rate, Venice > Newcastle

The 3700+ will overclock the same as (if not better than) the 3800+, plus it will have the benefit of a 1 meg cache when doing so.

If you don't overclock (I only do so on rare occasions), then the 3800+ Venice would be excellent. However, the difference between it and the 3700+ San Diego is quite minimal, and it leaves you open for overclocking later should you change your mind...

No worries...and should you want to try some overclocking, you've come to the right place. The guys (and gals) here are pretty good about helping out with answers to your questions...just be prepared for a lot of differing opinions!
