I have just upgraded my system to a 3200+ Venice core with MSI K8N Neo2 Platty and PDP XBL memory. I'm trying to overclock but I'm having trouble hitting 2.2 Ghz without windows crashing or the computer would just shut down at random times. I'm guessing my power supply isn't good enough? I currently am using an Allied 400 watt PS to run with CPU/MB with 2 dvd drives and 3 hard drives. PS is enough to run at stock, but will upping Mhz need more power even at same cpu core voltage? Thanks for all the help.

you need to run a search. You will find a TON of topics on overclocking. Basically, you need to drop your HTT from 5X to 4 or 3X and increase your FSB until it starts to get unstable. Then you need to up your voltage. Also memory timings and voltages need to be adjusted.

...like I said...do a search.

Sorry, I have searched quite a bit, but nothing much on power needed for Athlon64's. I see most people having 450+ watt PS's. I have the HTT at 3x and have a 100 divider on the memory with loose settings in 2T. My main question lies in the Power Supply. Thanks.

I'm guessing your question actually lies with your hard drives.

On that MSI motherboard, only 2 of the 4 SATA ports are locked, meaning you will experience corruption, instability, etc. if the HDDs are hooked up to the unlocked ports.

Please list your complete rig specs, particularly what type of HDDs you are using.

The Silicon Image SATA ports are locked; the nVidia ones are not.

Also, run Memtest86 to test your RAM for instability.

yes, put your sata drives in sata ports 3&4, and set the pci lock, also read the a64 overclocking sticky. make sure you reduce the htt multi.

My power supply says it can run 17 amps for the 12V rail. I'm not running any sata drives, I have a 3 PATA's: 160 GB baracuda and 2 WD 80 GB SE hard drives hooked up.

Most likely your power supply. Allied is not a brand meant for overclocking.

You may need to increase your voltage a little bit. I would however suspect your PSU as your limiting factor.

And to answer your original question: Overclocking, even without increasing voltage, will raise your power usage.
