Saw a sub on sale at frys today and listened to it for a few minutes. I didnt end up buying it till I read some reviews and did some forum-FU. Does anyone have any experience with them or work know someone who does?

Compared to some KLH and other cheapo subs this thing sounded alot tighter and had decent low end response. I dont want to buy something that isnt gonna last me. I dont want to walk into a lolbosenoob situation so if someone can guide me to enlightenment I would be very grateful.

Velodyne makes solid products, that sounds like one of their entry-level subwoofers. I don't know exactly which model to which you are referring to, however, in that price range, they are known to make subwoofers that have lower distortion, and OK to decent cabinetry which gives that tighter sound. You will not get very low bass (probably quits at 30hz), but for everything about that, it should do fine provided your room isn't too large.

The only other subwoofer I know of in that price range that is worth considering is the Parts Express Dayton 12" premade subwoofer. I would not expect, in that price range, that subwoofers made from Sony, KLH, etc. would stand a chance.

Nevertheless, if you can save up to about 200$, the AV123.com's Onix X-sub is a good choice for the 'next level' in bass reproduction.

You pretty much nailed it yourself. It is better than the low end crap that fills that price range. It is, however, a long way from Velodyne's higher end subs.

For $129, it is a good buy. As Tiamat said, it should easily outperform Sony, KLH, etc.

It depends on your speakers and room size but velodyne makes very nice subs (I have the vrp-1200, a sony 8" and Infinity PS-8). I am not familiar with that specific model but from what I have noticed (and reiterated from what Tiamat said) they have better cabinetry than what I have seen from the other subs in that price range from sony, ba, klh. They also have good range for the freqs and great customer service (I had to send in my new vrp-1200 for an electrical short and hit no snags on the way)

I'll 2nd the suggestion of the Dayton subs from partsexpress.com I've heard most of them and they have all impressed me. Very musical, very clean.

I have heard one budget Velodyne sub, the VX-10. It sounded pretty good, although I would give the edge to the Dayton 10 for the same price.

I just got the Dayton a couple days ago and so far like it. I'm confused how to fine tune the sub however... What frequency and volume should it be set at?

Just for some background, I'm running an Onkyo receiver with a Polk csi25 center and two Polk R50s.

Use the LFE connection then set speakers to small in the Onkyo. This will then allow you to use the reciever to route the proper freq to the subwoofer, setting this to 80 on the reciever will then send freq 80 and below to the sub and should produce better sound. Doing this then all you need to play with is the sub volume cause the xover on the sub should not be used so it wont matter, then just mess with the volume on the sub according to your room and balance you want. If you wanna really get serious go but an SPL meter and adjust the sub volume that way.
