Velociraptor still good choice for performace?

Kinda been outa the computer scene for a while. Im looking to update my boot drive(74gb raptor). I was thinking the 300gb velociraptor. I see a bunch of SSD related threads, but I dont know much about that crap.

Velociraptor still a decent buy if youre looking for speed?

For the same price of a 300GB Velociraptor you can get a SSD that's twice as fast (perhaps an understatement) although the tradeoff is space (80GB).

If you need to install your entire STEAM collection on a drive, then I would say a Velociraptor is an acceptable compromise.

And at about 1/3 the cost of a VelociRaptor. 😉

Exactly!

The only reason to get a vraptor is for os boot drive where you can't opt for the more expensive SSDs. Otherwise for game installs/file storage a fast 7200rpm drive is just as good and a lot cheaper.

What I have and would recommend is to have a smaller vraptor 150gig for os (its about equal to 2*74gig gen 1 raptors in RAID0, with faster seek ofcourse) and a larger 7200 rpm drive for installs/storage. (I use the first 300 gig partition of a 1tb Samsung F1 drive for game installs and rest for file storage)

This is the setup I pretty much have. While I'd love to boot from an SSD, prices are (for me) still too high for them. In a year or so, when the technology is mature and prices are lower, my Raptor (hot little devil) will find its way out of my case and into an external enclosure for some sort of backup. I have too many magnetic spinners as it is.

But the Velociraptor is more expensive than the Intel 80GB X25-M. At least where I live. No way would I buy the Velociraptor anymore. And never did it even cross my mind to be honest.

I just got my intel X25-M G2 80GB two days ago... best upgrade I have ever had. This is amazingly fast, I am frankly bored, I don't know what to do with my time because things are so fast. My last raptor was the 74GB one (GD), I replaced it with a WD640 platter drive as main OS. now I got the intel as the main OS drive. (with the WD640 as secondary drive... and of course a raid6 fileserver).

If space is an issue, than the velociraptor is still too small compared to a 2TB drive.

Hum. So SSDs have very fast access times as well id assume? Also, last time I was doing reading, SSDs only had limited number of writes I thought?

And lastly, if I was deciding between a raptor and SSD, is the X25-M G2 the best bet? It looks like it has a 80gb and 160gb version. Not to say id even consider spending $400+ for a 160gb drive but..

Good SSDs like intel and vertex are TWO ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE better at access times than a raptor.

is the X25-M G2 the best bet
- yes, by a large margin.

SSDs only had limited number of writes I thought
- totally non issue in modern SSD. EVERY SINGLE COMPONENT in your PC has a limited lifespan... early ssds were suffering from extremely low life spans. Current SSDs are ridiculously high. I calculated it will take me 300 YEARS to use up the expected writes of my X25 based on my usage rates.

just like first gen oled monitors (the 11 inch sony) have 40% less lifespan than an LCD (which is about 5 years) screen... while the new AMOLED from samsung coming up has 30% more lifespan than an LCD.

I am about to buy an Intel SSD(whenever they come back in stock), and I have a Velociraptor 150... its only about 4 months old. So far has been quite fast, not as fast as the GSkill Titan SSD that it replaced, but it also doesn't suffer from random studdering. I am going to attempt to sell it as soon as I get the SSD, if you want I can PM you when I do. Its been a great drive, I have Vista, Fallout 3, Eve, GTA4, and a ton of iTunes, plus Office 07 and other utilites.. still have 65 gigs free. I also have a terabyte secondary disk and a 320 gb external. I will sell the drive for.. $100 shipped? Whatever you decide make sure the size of the drive is something you can live with, then decide if you "have the need for speed".

Maybe if you run IOMeter at max queue depth continuously for 3 years straight (and double that for the 160GB) you'd have a shot at breaking the drive. Of course there's a thing called SLC which you'd be more intelligent to use for a server.

As far as VRs, yes, sell them as soon as you get the chance.

The 150gig vraptor here costs less than half the price of the 80gig intell SSD which goes for 500 bucks.

I'd probably want 2 of them, but will wait a bit more, for that price I can do a full i7 upgrade.

actually, if you do that on an intel drive it will simply cap your write speed to ensure 5 year operation.

but why would you intentionally TRY to break your drive by setting a looping write of garbage?

You don't. The point is, it would take a server workload to gun the drive down, and if you ran a server you'd get the SLC drive.

yeah i've got cheetah 15K's that are 6-7 years old; running balls out in an array 24x7x365. i'm not so sure if ANY SSD solutions could handle that level of write iops. I expect the cheetah's to last a few more years.

not running... WRITING. are you WRITING data non stop at max write speed 24x7x365?

I just checked the size of all my games that are installed on this computer (not even close to what I have) and it is 68.5GB. This isn't counting Windows, other programs, etc. Before I got my 300GB VelociRaptor my 150GB Raptor X was filled up.

60-80GB SSDs would be insufficient for my needs and bigger SSDs (or multiple ones) become very expensive.

I also don't believe in just running Windows off the SSD and everything else off 7200RPM drives. Windows boots once and you're done for the day. Throughout the day I'm running other stuff and I want the other stuff to be fast. I like being (usually) the first one loaded in L4D as infected because that means I'm the Smoker. 😀

That's what I do, VelociRaptor to run stuff off, and big HDDs for storage.

I am pretty excited that we are seeing more and more "good" SSDs on the market, and seeing prices creep down. I do think there is still a bit to go before they become a no-brainer alternative to a hard drive.

I'll be picking up a couple of Intel SSD 80gig drives pretty soon (I'll wait til they fix the firmware before I do) which I think will be more than sufficient for an operating system such as an upcoming Windows 7. I almost did that at the beginning of this year and it's a good thing I didn't get any cause I saved myself a lot of money...

This is what I'm planning to do...

Two 80 gig SSD drives in RAID 0 for OS (in this case Win7 Ultimate 64bit)

The two 2.5" 150gb VRaptors in my sig will now be used for progs/utilities/win addons etc.

And last but not least the two 320gb Scorpio Blacks will be dedicated to games only...

I'm very excited about this setup once I put it together...🙂

yeah i'm writing 24x7x365 (surveillance).

300gb 15K SAS are about $300~ from hp smart buy nowadays. probably get them cheaper without the hot swap cage for the z800 workstation.

your surveillance system produces 70MB/s of video?
