I'm really debating on whether to buy a 150GB VR or spend more and get an SSD

They would be just boot drives, with Windows 7 running off them and WoW, Adobe Creative Suit, Office, most likely some other games in the future (SC2 and D3)

Can anyone give me a definitive reason to get one or the other, I honestly just can't decide.

My Rig:
Dell XPS 8000 Chasis
i7 860 hHT
8GB 1333 Ram
ATI 5770
Corsair 650WTX
Stock HD (500GB 7200RPM)
Windows 7 64bit

It really depends on how much money oyu have free, and what you feel comfortable with spending. It's always a tradeoff, since more speed equals more $$.

That said, IMHO, I'd go with SSD if the money isn't a problem. I went from a 7200rpm HD to SSD, and wouldn't want to go back (except at work, where my work PC has a spinning HD still).

Could I live with the 7200rpm at home if I had to? Sure. But I do like the quickness of the SSD's, and to me at least, they are affordable.
 
curious what SSD are you using?

I'd like to spend no more then 200-250, I know that's not a very high amount but I figure an 80GB OS drive would work fine with just programs and games.
 
SSD all the way. Before then, I had VelociRaptor 150GB or 300GB as my boot drive for my home and work PCs. Bootup is faster. No more hour glass when I login to Windows. Launching applications are almost instant. No heat, no noise, little power consumption.

Isnt that Adata model based on the 1st gen Intel?.....I would rather get the Indix (sp) barefoot model with TRIM!

I have a 80gig X-25M (gen 1) and a 120gig Vertex. To be honest, I couldn't tell the two apart when I used each one as a boot drive. I think both are equally great.

And those are the two I would recommend, either the OCZ Vertex or Intel (gen2) drives.

A 60gig Vertex might not be too expensive, and work great for OS/apps. You could keep your 500gig for data/music/etc.
 
I have the Intel X-25M G2 80 gig and OH MY is it Fast! I have Windows 7 Pro 64 full install and office 2007 enterprise. Using only @21 gigs.
 
Add up the entire amount of disk space you would need for Windows, WoW and your apps, then multiply that by two. Find a good SSD (crappy ones will have you running back to the VelociRaptor in no time) of that capacity, and if you can afford it, then buy it.

BTW, you will probably still want a normal hard drive to put your data on, and maybe to route My Documents to.
 
Yeah I'd need at least a 80GB Drive, so the A-DATA that's pretty much an intel g2 is probably my go to

I'm just praying for a sale when it gets in stock, think I need to get a 3.5 converter too

Unless you absolutely need more than 80 gigs of fast storage go with the SSD. I personally moved my old 74 gig raptor to my new computer because 80 wasn't enough for me so excess old programs go there since I don't worry about their performance.
 
Yeah I'd just have the 500GB as music/software installations/etc...

Apps and Games from the SSD definitely, now I need it to be in stock or an amazing deal on the intel g2 80gb
 
one question i have is how do you put these in the case? i see one mention here that an adapter is needed to fit into standard hard drive cages. if there are no moving parts can't you just say lay it on the bottom of case?

Yes, some people do this.

I've read the easiest way is to get the 2.5 -> 3.5 converter like this one:

that's for two, I also think the intel retail SSD comes with it's own.

You can do that if the hard drive doesn't come with a bracket. The retail version (R5) of the Intel X-25 Gen2 drives come with the bracket.
 
I plastic tied it with my 3.5" HDD for a while. Then, I bought the Silverstone 2.5-3.5 converter for $7.99 @ Amazon.
 
I'm tempted to just buy the g2 80gb intel with adapter 😛 just spend the extra 40 bucks

but that's just pure laziness

same experience as i had, ssd is my vote

but if u play wow u may consider a bigger drive since the patches and the expansion later may eat up ur space

Sure you can, at one point years ago I had no space in my case so I put a regular HD at the bottom of my case upside down with some super glue. I don't recommend doing that, but it worked just fine with a regular HD 😀

I'd love the 160 but that's a little to expensive for me right now 🙁

Maybe I should wait and buy the same 500GB HD I have now and raid it till prices drop
