I could get the used 150GB Velociraptor with 3.5yrs warranty for $55 USD.

But I only really need 40-50GB for the OS Drive and some games.

Are SSDs worth it now???

Velociraptor or SSD?

$55 for a USED Velociraptor I'd rather spend a little more and get an NEW SSD for a lil bit more which will also be faster in about anything.

Corsair Force, definitely. You want the Sandforce controller, I don't trust anything from OCZ after their 25nm debacle.

It's a tricky situation. There are so many hard drives out right now that have great performance compared to older drives.

$55 is really good for that disk, but performance wise there's probably other large disks that have similar numbers.

gun to my head, I'd buy the $55 velociraptor and put the saved money into another component, unless i didn't have a budget and was building a sick computer.

Somebody posted in this thread w\ screen shots of 300gb vs 150gb vs 74gb velociraptors. It shows around 100-125MB/sec for the 150gb version.

Corsair F60 vs F60A? What's the difference?

I believe that the F60A uses 22nm NAND vs 34nm NAND for the F60. 34nm does perform a decent bit better on the Sandforce controller, but the F60A will not be slow by any means. It'll still be a factor of ten faster than the Velociraptor in random IO.

I wonder why the seller is trying to get rid of the Velo so desperately.... and I wonder why no one has purchased it yet. Is it because it's the worst drive in terms of speed and capacity and accoustics?

I finally read on Corsair's site that F60As are 25nm. Sounds like the OCZ fiasco minus all the smoke screens. Pretty much all the manufacturers are going to 25nm because it's more cost-effective....even if it means the new tech are 2-3% slower. Shouldn't make a noticeable difference but still...

Right now my options are:

WD Velociraptor 150GB 10000RPM $60 CAD
WD Black 640GB SATA3 64mb 7200RPM $68 CAD
Corsair F60 60GB SSD $107 - $125 CAD (depending if I can get a deal)

SSD, no contest. The key is the vastly superior random r/w speeds, which no spindle can match. That is the reason for the quick, snappy experience of the SSD.

no debate, go with a SSD over a mechanical HD anyday

+1 for the corsair force series

have a 60gb corsair force and it's a speedy drive

It's because it is a USED HDD. $55 is not a surprising price. I got my 150GB Velo for $89.99 2.5 years ago. Also, something that people have not been stating is that the Velociraptor drives are LOUD. It is the easily the LOUDEST thing in my workstation and I am getting rid of it ASAP. It drives me nuts. Grinding and humming all the time... UGH!

I think you know my vote xD...
