Velociraptor and USB enclosure

Can I format a Velociraptor drive that I put in a USB to SATA enclosure? Just wasn't sure if the two were meant to go together. Thanks.

Or do a quick format. If the drive is iffy, better to run the manufacturer's tool to do a surface scan than to rely on a full format to tell you if something's wrong.
