Vegemite (pronounced /ˈvɛdʒɨmaɪt/ VEJ-ə-myt) is a dark brown Australian food paste made from yeast extract. It is a spread for sandwiches, toast, crumpets and cracker biscuits, and filling for pastries.

Vegemite is made from used brewers' yeast extract, a by-product of beer manufacturing, and various vegetable and spice additives. It is salty, slightly bitter, and umami or malty — similar to beef bouillon. The texture is smooth and sticky. It is not as intensely flavoured as British Marmite and it is less sweet than the New Zealand version of Marmite.

When I was in Australia it took a bit of education on how to properly prepare vegemite toast, but now that I know, it's like delicious salty goodness. I have two massive jars at home, should tide me over until about 2020.

Actually, if you've never had it, it kind of tastes like soy sauce, just in spreadable form.

Properly prepare toast? Are Australians just dumb? I know 9 year olds in America who make great toast.

Come to think of it, in America we feed stuff like this to pigs. To make delicious bacon.

Everyone thinks they can make proper toast but very few know how to make it.

A hot tip, a toaster is NOT involved when you make proper toast.

As to what proper British Marmite tastes like, it tastes like honey and bacon, in a jar ready to spread on your properly made toast.

Of course, if you don't like proper toast, honey or bacon, perhaps you'd like to wear a wig and be called Sally?

IIRC ATI used to hold vegemite eating contests for video cards.

I'm a big fan of Marmite. I'd like to try Vegemite, but I've never seen it.

Fair enough. I just meant I did the cardinal sin the first time I had vegemite. I looked at it, thought it was a typical spread, and slapped it on, much like you'd do with jam or peanut butter or anything else you spread on toast. Pretty sure I almost vomited.

It should go on liberally buttered toast, and a very thin layer.

The ingredients dont seem that much different than commercial vegetable base, and that makes for great soups.

I had an Aussie roommate in college and he used to eat the shit out of Vegemite toast. I tried it once and I didn't like it.

Last summer my wife and I were on our honeymoon in the Cook Islands, and their thing there was Marmite. I tried it and it was as bad as Vegemite.

To me they both taste like a cross between soy sauce and beef bouillon. Yuck.
