Today is my last day of work for a week... tomorrow at 7am, I will be flying out of JFK and visiting sin city for the first time. We're staying at the Tropicana, seeing Cirque de Soleil 'O', seeing Blue Man Group, visiting the damn dam, and having dinner on top of the Stratosphere. I'm kinda on a limited budget due to my wife and I closing on our house next month, so what is there to do that's free or relatively cheap?

UPDATE: After a very tiring trip, I have returned to the land of work and computers. I wish I was still out there even though it was hotter than well... anywhere else I've ever been. Lots of fun was had, went to Studio 54 and Ra. Blue Man > 'O' Lost $200 between the wife and I. Got a tan. Wish I wasnt at work...

Here are a buncha pics, I didnt bother taking my camera out at night due to the fact I didnt want to have to worry about busting up my $500 baby. enjoy

The buffet at Circus Circus is to die for. If you really dig on Swedish meatballs and Jell-O, that is.

The dam isn't really that far away, so if you have a lot of leftover time on your hands I HIGHLY suggest going to Valley of Fire State Park. I think there is a small gate fee ($5 or $10), but it is really cool if you like unusual scenery (kind of like the stuff in RoadRunner cartoons).

I was told a car can be had for $15/day so it's not a strain on your budget. Wouldn't renting for 1 day really be a hassle considering you have to go pick it up and drop it off [at the airport?] ??

Awesome, I'll definately suggest it to the group! we were going to goto the Canyon, but 4 hours isnt exactly a short trip.

Welp all those are already paid for except dinner. We took out like $800 in cash to hopefully last the time we're there.

Blue man group show is especially expensive if your on a budget...but its very cool to see...when you get your rental car, make sure they dont charge you extra $$ to drive out of the state (to see the dam) Had some friends have that happen to them a year ago, boy did that suck...

otherwise...all the buffets are good, and cheap to boot! have fun

other places to go if you feel like driving is red rock canyon at sunset, its...northwest of LV i think...the locals should know where to go. Be sure you leave with plenty of time to see the sunset out there...not on your way there :)

Check the 'SHOWTIME' magazine in your hotel room. There are plenty of coupons in there for use around town. Always a buy 1 get 1 free for the comedy clubs around town (been to the one at the Trop a few times).

Bottoms Up is usually a buy 2 drinks get in free sort of thing. Show is terrible, but it's relatively cheap and it's a Vegas tradition.

Purple Rain, a great Prince tribute band, is at the Boardwalk many nights.

Big Elvis each day at the Barbary Coast is free.

Any reason you're watching Blue Man in Vegas instead of in NY (AFAIK, both shows are supposed to be equally good.) I see you said it's already paid for, but perhaps you could've used that money and time for something more Vegas-specific.

Just visiting all the hotels will take up a lot of time. I personally loved the Venetian. Spent like 3 hrs. alone in there.

Couple of freeshows you might want to check out, since this is your first trip:

1. Water Fountain in front of Bellagio
2. Sirens of the Cove at Treasure Island
3. Volcano Eruption at Mirage
4. Carnival in the Sky at Rio

Well, there is always the free stuff like the Sirens Show out in front of TI, the Volcano at Mirage, Belagio Fountains, Masquerade Party in the Sky at the Rio and even the Freemont Street Experience Downtown. As for fun stuff to do, if you are a trekie, you can hit the Klingon and new Borg encounter stuff at the Hilton. You can also use the new monorail to get around a bit, even though it might be easier to hop a cab in off peak hours.
.
Tropicana is way down on the end behind MGM. So, you are semi stuck in walking distance to only going to MGM, Luxor, NYNY, Excaliber, Mandalay Bay and maybe the Monte Carlo. Anything else is a bit of a hike in pretty hot and exhasting conditions. Trust me, it doesn't look far, but hoof it out to like Ceasars from MGM and you will be hoppin a cab to bring you back. :)

If you are into table games, I would suggest some of the smaller joints on the strip like O'Shea's, Rivera and Sahara. Low table limits and if you play well can sit there all day getting free drinks and havin fun. The stratosphere has crapless craps and single zero roulette.

It all depends on what you want and where. Best thing I can say to you is to sign up for every slot club you can find even if you don't play there. If you ever plan on coming back, you will get all kinds of deals in the mail from them. The Hilton and Aladin sends me almost monthly mailers on deals and my last trip was at the RIO where i got the suite for $29/night. :)

have fun traveling through the strip by foot or bus. it sucks, especially when you go from the Tropicana to dinner at the Strat, which is on the other side of the strip. You're pretty good at the Tropicana cause it's near all the nice resorts.

The ride at the Stratosphere is pretty cool.
as said, the state park is cool.

also .. when in the casins .. sit at the slot machine where the servers cross the path frequently. increases your odds of free alcohol.

There is a nice laser show at 8 & 10PM at Sams. Free. Daytime shows also, however, much better when dark.

Do not figure on 4 hours to the canyon. That is pushing it. Those roads aree not high speed.
Plan on a whole day at the canyon - either rim. South (AZ) is more famous, but the north rim is better view.

There are coupons in the local tourist mags for helo rides over the canyon and/or the lake.

Red Rock canyon would be nice to visit.

The Rio has a nice 30 minute show for free. The buffet is decent.
The top of the Strat is impressive, however, you get charged to visit.

Make sure that you catch the free show inside the Venitian plaza. Gondola rides can be very appreciating.
There are shows at Caesars inside the forums that are enjoyable.

Make sure that you get down to Freemont (downtown) at night. They recently redid the light show.

Also, seeing that you are from the East Coast, there is a Frys about 5 minutes from the airport.
You may be able to recover the trip cost in savings and/or resale profits.

Above all bring plenty of change. Saves us locals from having to worry about income taxes.

i'm sorry to say but the tropicana is one of the worst hotels on the strip. if you get the garden room, tell them you want to upgrade. trust me, anywhere but the garden room is good. it smells and looks like old, rusty and dingy. since this is your first time there and its probably too late to cancel the hotel reservation, definitely try to upgrade, it will totally be worth it. but then again, i haven't stayed at one of their upgraded rooms. i was thinking, any other room is better than one of their garden rooms. btw...play craps.

I know a few good restaurants in Vegas. Fairly cheap too. In general, anything around the University tends to be cheap. Some good places there too. Check out Sun's House Korean BBQ off of Maryland past Tropicana.

When you're trying to get around Vegas in a car -- if you're driving -- remember that Desert Inn is the only road in Vegas that goes over the Strip. Besides the expressways.
