you can also get (but not in my building) FTTH (fibre to the home) where you have a dedicated fibre line poking right through the basement wall of your house (in japan, primarily in the suburbs of Tokyo/Yokohama and Osaka) its a bit pricy, around 100 a month, but you do actually get pure 100mbit connection straight to the CO.
doesnt help too much though if you all you do is surf north american or eurpean sites. But we have two 100mbit fibre lines at work, and i can pull down servicec packs from microsoft at around 2 megs a second, thats mega BYTES per second
