I came across an ISP at Bostream (this place is in Sweden) offering a package for up to 26 Mbps download and upload. This is their "Scream DSL" package btw and it would only cost 398 (Swedish Krona) which converts to about $49 a month!

I'm not aware of ADSL reaching these speeds and after searching around, I've found out that VDSL does this and even higher using pure fiber optic connection directly from the house to the CO.

I've read articles in the past where brand new neighborhoods are being outfitted with fiber optics and was wondering if anyone has seen VDSL being offered in any such neighborhood in the US.

thanks for your reply.

I highly doubt it. In europe, I believe they are running fiber right up to your house. They arent doing it here yet, altho they should be within a few years as I believe they have recently came out with a fiber data switch small enough to be practical for the masses.

Some places are running ftth, but its expensive, and many who try wind up going broke. I wouldn't count on it being anything wide spread here for quite a while, there's just too much copper in place already to spend money on laying fiber.

I would like to know how its affordable for the ISP to offer that kind of connectivity to their customers. How much bandwidth do they have coming in to their facilities and how much do they pay for it.......

Same questions I had too. I was shocked at the pricing scheme and it gets more confusing if you look at the other plans which are just a few dollars less but offer only 500kbps - 1 mbps.

They probably have a single T3 and all of the users have to fight over it. Maybe at 03:00 you could see close to the 26mbps.
