Best? Your topic says which is BEST and you only want the basics once I open the post. This is somewhat confusing. Care to clarify? What's your price range? A GREAT VCR is the Toshiba 6-head line but if you only want something mediocre, that won't do.

Go for something cheap. VCRs are disposable machines. I found out the hard way.

I've bought $1,000+ VCRs, $500 VCRs and about 4 months ago I bought a $250 Panasonic SVHS VCR and they have all gone bad in a relatively short time. I was thinking of getting a cheap $100 Sony VCR but saw all the good reviews on the $250 Panasonic so I went for it. It was a stupid move because the thing is acting up now. When rewinding (without playing), the sound comes on and you hear a really annoying high pitched sound. I've got to change the channel on the TV to avoid listening to it.

Stick with the cheap ones that'll do the job for you.

You can find lots of reviews of VCRs here.

sorry to be so vague but, i dont want to spend too much. i dont need all the all of the bells and whistles oif a $1000 vcr, i just need one that will last a while. i remember my mom bought a RCA a few years ago and it sucks. the heads are messed up i think since the audio sounds all wavy. ive cleraned it multiple times. OTOH i still have our very first vcr which is a very old toshiba, i mean like 10 years+ and it is still going strong, its just that it doesnt record with the highest quality anymore, which is fine its getting old. so i need one that will give me good picture quality with decent sound quality. i dont need 5.1 suround or anything, just the basics.

thanks

VCRs? They are so, like, 80s/90s. :)

Wal-Mart has some pretty good VCRs for cheap. I saw one for about $65. Get what you can, get what you want.

Really, any reputable company should do. Sony is good, Panasonic is good, RCA does suck though. My dad has a toshiba VCR, its been running good for 12 years!

I've always liked Toshiba for video components.

I must say that now that I have a ReplayTV and I generally only rent DVDs, my VCR is collecting dust.

Ditto here bigsmooth. I love my ReplayTV! The only thing I use the VCR for is to play Winnie the Pooh video tapes for my little son.

Definitely! Luckily, my Simpsons theme on my Replay records 11 episodes a week, normally I don't have time to watch more than 4 or 5 so I can see the best ones (and skip through the commercials). :D
