VCR, DVD, Console, etc out to Monitor?

I'm trying to find out if there is a way(s) to hook up a gaming console, in particular, to a Monitor. It can be through a special Video Card, adapter, or some kind of jacks. I was thinking about using a basic video card as an adapter between component video and Monitor connector. What do you people think?

Check out the Audio Authority 0962A.

This will take progressive scan HD signals to true VGA. No upscans. The drawback? Your output signal has to be progressive scan..

I purchased one of these for my XBOX. Should have it hooked up tonight. I can give you an update if interested.

Yeah, that would be great. Try hooking up a non-progressive signal like a VCR to it. I'd love to get my hands on the schematic of this thing.

I got the transcoder hooked up last night.. I originally posted my results in another thread.. out of lazyness, here is a quick copy/paste 🙂

<< As Promised, the transcoder arrived & here is an update..

Honestly, It works just as I figured it would.. True VGA output quality and identical to the picture on true HDTV's. If you have owned a Dreamcast with a VGA adapter, the picture output is very similar in quality. The current generation of xbox games are locked at 480p, which equates to 640x480@60hz. If I recall correctly, this is also what the Dreamcast VGA also output.

One thing to note is that this transcoder will not output a 480i signal, so you will not be able to see the xbox intro or setup screens on your monitor. You can bypass this by hooking up the Y component cable (Green) to a composite input, setup your xbox, & move the connection back over to the transcoder. I have mine setup a little differently. The transcoder has component pass thru, so I run a composite cable from the Y pass thru to my TV card. If I need to setup my xbox, I use the TV Card, which eliminates the need for cable swapping.

Anyway, Here is a real quick breakdown of what I see to be the +'s and -'s.

+'s
-Image much sharper
-Textures much clearer
-Items in the distance are easier to make out.
-Text much easier to read

-'s
-Some Aliasing can occur...again, if you have seen a Dreamcast on a TV and VGA monitor you know what to expect.
-Any inherent artifacting that is masked by a TV, will become much more noticeable (i.e. Sprite popup, misaligned polygons, texture flashing)
-No xbox setup menu's

In closing, this Item is not for everyone.. Getting the xbox on a VGA monitor is a luxury & you pay for it. Am I glad that I spent the money? Yes. Is the picture quality better than on my 32" Wega (s-video)? Yes. Would I rather be playing on a large HDTV? Yes, but as stated earlier, this is not an option for me right now.

Before purchasing one of these transcoders, I would recommend that you..
1) Get a good look at the Dreamcast outputing VGA. The ouput quality is very, very similar.
2) Get a good look at a xbox running @ 480p on a 4:3 HDTV.
