VCD problems - any ideas?

Is that the issue? What should they be on, then?

All my IDE drives are using DMA mode.
*PIO mode uses the CPU continuously for the exchange of Data from the drive to your system memory.
*Direct Memory Access uses the disk controller to move data directly to memory without tying up the processor.

Sounds like at least part of your playback problem. The Data rate itself is not that great <1500 kbit/sec audio and video together. It plays back better off the hardrive because its data transfer rate is much faster than your CD/DVD drives. Navigate to the MPEGAV and play the *.dat file in WMP (or whatever), does it play better? Maybe your files are a bit out of compliance, and maybe it is the media?

I'd start by putting the drive you're playing the VCD on, into DMA mode (device manager>ide controllers>advanced>something about DMA if available>reboot) <--something like that, syntax is way off.
