VCD/NERO 5.5 Problems.

Hi Everyone.

I just got a little Nero problem. Well, I just got involved recently with VCDs and SVCDs (sorry, I got no DVD burner yet ) and am trying to burn my own videos. My questions are as follows:

1. Can you only burn .avi or other media such as .wmv is OK?
2. Would .avi be more prefferable to convert into VCD over other formats?

3. When I burn VCDs with Nero 5.5, after reaching the 65% coding process, the system stalls. I can use the computer all fine, but the CPU is "dead" and Nero is not "thinking" anymore and it seems like the coding process stops. How come?


That's it guys. The most puzzling thing is the fact that the stupid thing hangs when I try to convert a big file(s). When it comes to small ones, let's say up to 100MB, Nero seems just fine and converts/burns the VCD without hick-ups.

if you're trying to convert like a hour and a half divx/xvid avi into a vcd, you're going to have to split it. mpeg can only hold so much on a single cdr. you may want to look into some ulead tools, or go to doom9.org and research it a tad more.

DO NOT USE Nero to convert avi's etc to VCD or SVCD.....

Use TMPG (freeware.. mpeg1 for VCD's) or TMPGplus (payware.. Mpeg1/VCD's and mpeg2 for SVCD's and DVD's plus ES's).

Frameserve your original AVI with VdubMod to TMPG and demux the audio to a .wav if TMPG has problems with the original audio.

TMPG will then tell you how many CD's................or better still use a Bitrate Calculator (I suggest VideoCalc for AVI's, VCD's and SVCD's....or remember the rule below).

You can then burn the mpeg stream as a VCD or SVCD with Nero.

An 80mins/700mb CD will hold UP TO 80mins (1hr 20 mins) of video when burnt as VCD and about 45 mins if a SVCD.
