OK, I have a Radeon 64meg DDR card and use it in my secondary system primarily for capturing all my old video tapes and home movies and creating VCDs. I use Roxio 5.x platinum to make the vcds from standard mpeg captures. I have been doing this for a while and it has always worked fine. I have always played them back on my PC but finally got around to trying to play it back on my standalone DVD player (Pioneer DVL-909) Which is a laser disc/DVD combo player. My problem is that these discs do not play back on the 909! I know it is capable of playing vcds as I have a bunch of legitamate VCDs that play back fine. I dont know why but the vcds I make dont work on the 909 but work fine on my PC. Is it roxio that screws it up? I use namebrand cdrs. The file structure on the roxio-made vcds look fine. Its not copy protection as my home movies dont work either. I use the ATI capture SW, ver 7.1 I think. Is there a better way to make VCDS? I just use standard mpeg-1 capture, nothing fancy, no special codecs. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

According to the DVD compatability listing on vcdhelp, your standalone DVD player should play CD-R's and CD-RW's. I have found that most of the standalone DVD players I've tried out have been happier with VCD's burned on CD-RW's. Try buring one of your VCD's on a good quality CD-RW and see if that works for you.

I tried buring to good cdrws and cdrs to no avail. Is there another program that makes vcds out of standard mpegs? Something thats as fast as roxio? Ill check that link and see if they have anything. thanks.

Nero Burning ROM does a much better job of burning VCD's that actually play. I managed to get Roxio to work only after putting extra playlist and copyright files on the disc. You need to get the commercial version, I believe, to have (S)VCD capability.
