VCache question

NOVICE HERE! My system: MSI KT# Ultra main board, Athlon 1.7GHz, 512Meg 184 Pin DDR (266MHz) RAM. Problem is I run out of memory too fast. I flight sim a lot, but some times I get a "not enough memory" notice with only one program running (not flight sim). Some times it shows when I first boot up. I go to System.ini, and under [vcache] there is nothing. My instructions tell me that this is where I can add maximum and minumum vcache. Should I see something here? Is my system is set up right? Am I looking in the right place? Does this sound like a VCache problem? Anyone had any experience with MemoKit? I know that this is a lot of questions by I appreciate any help.

The vcache isn't likely the problem. I assume you're running Win98? If you search Google you can find instructions telling you exactly what settings can be put in there, and even Microsoft provides them in their knowledge base. However, the issue only affects Win98 if you've got over 512MB. Up to that there is no problem at all. What programs have given you this error? Is it actually the program giving the error or Windows telling you in general you don't have enough memory?

I run Windows 98 SE. In flight sim I just run MSFS2002 with some scenery and GA ad-ons. I also run CFS3. Novice that I am, I didn't make a note of the specific circumstances and what programs were running, however, I have had it happen the first thing in the morning. I will make notes and get back. Are you guys saying then that my vcache should not have a maximum and minimum under it?

It shouldn't make any difference. The primary time that the vcache settings are an issue is when you have OVER 512MB in Win9x. Modifying the settings by making entries there MIGHT make a difference, but most likely the Win98 defaults are fine for those. The fact that the error happens even when you've just booted the computer but also at random other times would seem to indicate there's another issue. What that issue may mean I don't know.

You might want to try out Cacheman if you'd really like to play with the cache.

The vcache settings control how much of the system memory can be used for caching hard disk data. So if you're running a program, Windows might load all the files for that app into the cache, even if the program isn't actually using them, so that when the program does need the files they're immediately available. The issue with having more than 512MB of memory is due to the limit of memory addresses, because Windows reserves address space when it boots in order to ensure there will be enough memory for the vcache size if needed. But it bases the reservation on the amount of memory installed, and can reserve ALL the addresses that the system requires for doing things like starting applications.

The error you're getting is one thing that happens when the vcache is a problem, and it certainly can't hurt to set the limits using Cacheman (minimum of 16MB and a max of 32MB is probably a good setting).

I use memturbo in win 98 as it will refresh the memory on the fly.
Win98 dosen't utalize memory like Win XP does. I upgraded to Win XP and the memory problems disappeared.

I was saying to myself, you should have done this a long time ago.

Vcache will not really help as I tried everything in Win 98 and the only thing was a memory manager prgram like the ones mentioned.
