Hello VC&G forum members and community at large,

Three months ago this community voted on, and approved, the adoption of a "thread-citation policy" as captured in this community poll thread.

The policy was intentionally implemented with an expiration date such that the community would have the opportunity to assess for themselves whether or not a citation policy was workable and have the desired effect by way of a trial period.

That trial period expires today (Mar 20, 2011).

As such, this new poll is dedicated to the community voting on permanent adoption of the same thread-citation policy that has been in effect since Dec 20, 2010.

From the moderator's perspective here is what we have observed over the past three months:
  1. The net effect of this policy in VC&G has been decidedly beneficial. Voluntary compliance rate has been quite high.
  2. There were only three instances where moderator intervention was required as a matter of enforcing this policy over the course of the past three months
  3. The number of warnings and infractions meted out for thread-crap posting, inflammatory posts, personal attacks and insults, and thread-derails has dramatically and steeply declined over the same three months
Yes you read that right, the forum has become markedly better mannered and less ill-tempered these past three months and as such the moderator workload has fallen off dramatically.

In summary, the thread-citation policy has:
  1. ...had the desired effect in quelling inflammatory threads/headlines as well as stemming the tide of escalating posting within said threads
  2. ...elevated the general sense of forum ownership within the community (self-censoring is far more prevalent and beneficial)
  3. ...not increased the moderator workload in the forum; rather, it has resulted in a marked decline in moderator workload owing to declines in thread-craps and personal insults/attacks
From a moderator standpoint we would like to see this policy permanently adopted for all the obvious reasons. Personally I like spending less of my time handing out infractions and getting to spend more of my time just enjoying the forum. And there doesn't appear to be any down-sides to the policy considering it has already been in effect these past 3 months.

Regardless my opinion or the preference of the moderators, the decision is up to the community, so please log your vote - for or against - the permanent adoption of the same thread-citation policy that has been in effect these past 3 months.

If adopted then we basically just keep the status quo from the past 3 months. If not adopted then we go back to the way things were last fall (for better or worse).

The poll will be open for 7 days. Thank you for your time.

Your VC&G Moderator Staff,
BFG10K, Markfw900, and Idontcare

voting yes reluctantly. My subscription to popcorn and lawnchairs of the month is going woefully underutilized.

In the past weeks have seen threads claiming "Official confirmation of card xyz" or "Specifications of card abc revealed" that turned out to have absolutely zero official confirmation of anything in them.

So yes, this policy has already proved necessary to avoid misinformation.

And even when it's not necessary, more information > less information.

Can't see a downside, really.

Out with the Lazy Mods!!! We need more Rollos!! Come on IDC, how hard is it to hit the "ban" button one more time... /sarcasm

I voted to continue current policy. Clearly vc&g is better this way, we've had a few somewhat-anticipated launches come off with relatively few warts in the past couple months. A true test will be when the 28nm high end cards hit from the big boys, but from what I've seen lately I expect that things will be at least a bit more civil going forward if we keep this policy. If nothing else, the viral marketers/spammers from both camps will slink off to more hospitable climes.

Blah, I barely post in here anymore for fear of getting hammered with some type of infraction. Mention the type of screws in some prop being held by some CEO and you get called to the carpet. It just isn't really worth it.

Please take your moderator challenge/callout drama to the Mod Discussion forum. This is your only warning.

Keep up the good work!! I was out of community forums due to all the drama 8 years ago... my brother recommended me to join AnandTech when I started building a new PC in Oct. 2010 and use my free time to enjoy tech toys.... I've enjoyed my stay here in AnandTech so far! But I must admit... some threads and comments are funny though...

The relatively high quality of discourse is what keeps me comming back to AT, and a strong moderator presence is largely responsible. I voted yes.

You need to spend more time in the sewer known as Politics and News.
You will definitely get your money's worth for your subscription.

voted yes, feel like rumor sites and the titles people can make up with them, should have a rumor/site name in front.
