Can files contaminated by the VBS.LoveLetter.C(1) virus be saved?

My friend had many .jpg files he wanted to save but they were now somename.jpg.vbs by name. Norton Systemworks 2002 claimed it couldn't fix them and "recommended" we "quarantine" these files. Then Norton recommended we delete them. Was this the only possibility? I mean, were these files just trashed?

"The contents of most of these files are replaced with the source code of the worm, destroying the original contents."

Sorry.

Ahem, backup - backup - backup. When will they ever learn?
Anyway, a good data recovery tool like R-Studio might be able to find some of the original data under the worm code. DL the trial and see.
