VB 5 & 6 Hourly Contracting Rate Poll

I am trying to gauge what the average hourly rate for working with VB 5 & 6 is. I have a client that would like me to update and debug some code for him and I am unsure of what to charge him.

I have called some places around town and was astonished at their hourly rates. Anywhere from $75-$125 an hour.

My client's code is basically a front end to an access database. It is mainly used to enter in data and to generate reports. Usual stuff...

Can you weigh in on this for me so that I might gain some perspective on it?

Thanks...

When you say your client... are you a solo consultant working for yourself? It is not unusual for consulting companies to charge that much. But I'd say it IS unusual if they are incredibly small or one man shops. A one man shop should charge less than established companies with numerous employees, but still a reasonable rate.

For now, yes I am solo consultant.

After speaking with some friends and other nefarious netizens, I was thinking about charging him $55 an hour. Thoughts?

If you charge $55, you come across as a poor student type or new entry in the field who doesn't think his work is worth as much as a professional's. If you charge $110, then you come across as a professional who's competing with other professionals charging similar rates.

Even if you only get half as much work at the higher rate, you still make the same amount of money, and you only half to do half as much work.

I say aim higher, not lower.

When I sub out contract work like this to my programming buddy, his rate (with a little added for me), is $75 - 100/hr, depending on the work.

Depends where you're located, but if consulting companies are charging $75+ an hour then something around 55 or 60 sounds right to me for an independent.

I've got about 5 years in programming/software development and generally charge somewhere between $35-65 depending on what the work involves. Sometimes a client wants simple HTML changes to their static website. I'm not going to rape the guy for 100/hour to add a few tags here and there. I agree that independent consultants should charge less than consulting shops because they don't have the manpower or resources and otherwise there'd be no reason to go with them.
