Vatican: Pope against Pop Music during mass

And I feel sick to my stomach. Not impressed with the Pope right now.

Vatican City, 26 June (AKI) - Pope Benedict XVI has called for traditional sacred music to be played during mass, condemning the ongoing custom of contemporary music at religious celebrations. "Updating sacred music is possible, but this cannot happen unless it follows the tradition of Gregorian chants or sacred polyphony," the pontiff said on Sunday on the sidelines of a concert in the Sistine Chapel. A skilled pianist with a predilection for Bach and Mozart, Benedict XVI spoke against a custom reportedly appreciated by his more informal predecessor John Paul II, who worked very hard throughout his papacy to make the Church more appealing to the younger generations.

In an interview published in Turin-daily La Stampa on Monday, the former Archbishop of Ravenna, veteran Cardinal Ersilio Tonini also condemned the practice saying that "Benedict XVI is right, mass is a meeting with God and to meet God sacred music is better than the turmoil of electric guitars, hand clapping and the husstle and bustle of disorderly sounds."

Tonini said that 40 years ago after the Second Vatican Council "making mass more popular and inviting could be understood." However, the cardinal added, "we exaggerated and now I believe it is legitimate to consider as over this season of breaks with tradition."

They can have different masses for different tastes. They used to celebrate it entirely in Latin. Those masses are also held. In fact, my mom, who has been attending Catholic Mass every single weekend for 60 of her 66 years prefers Latin Mass.

The Pope leads the church and the current one is an avowed conservative. This shouldnt have been unexpected.

the music will remain. he is speaking of the trend towards playing music that isn't considered a hymn.

exactly my point. in the choir I sing in, we play with electric guitars and a bit of rock.

not enough rock in my opinion, but we are working on it.

<-- not exactly what you would call a conservatic catholic.

i don't think he is limiting what instruments can be used, and plenty of sacred songs can be sang in a way to lean towards rock.

unfortunately, yes he is. And yes I agree, plenty of songs can be sang in a way that lean towards rock (which is what we were doing 😀)

Ever heard of the "Our Father" sang to a rock beat? I love it!

I sympathise with the pope. I mean it's electric guitars now, but how long do you think it'll take before everyone is singing "Mary is the telephone operator to my soul" in mass.

the nature of the songs won't change, just the means to commicate it with.

The "Our Father" actually became my favorite song. Just because of the way it was sung. Amazing what electric guitars can do!

Seems to me you are going to Mass for the wrong reasons...
You can buy contemporary Catholic Christian music and listen all you want in your everyday life.
But the music at mass is meant to be worshipful and sacred. Not a mumble jumbo of chords that have no beginning or end.
very few guitarist I have heard at at mass play in a solemn, worshipful manner.
The Pope is right concerning where the trends in Catholic Music being used for Mass purposes is heading towards.

Just so ya know I cantor on a weekly basis 6 services in our diocese.
I this trend wouldn`t be so bad but it has been my experience when confronted by a guitarist who is playing along with say a pianist or just by themselves that they lack basic music skills...its not a pretty sound when other people are trying to worship and the music is shall we say not of good quality!
Mass is sacred and as such the music should be a high quality with everybody taking there part in the mass seriously!

But that goes against catholicism. You're not supposed to be bouncing about enjoying a hip new twist on an old thing. You're supposed to be SERIOUSLY and SOLEMNLY contemplating the many ways in which you have fallen short of what the lord wants you to be. No hand clapping and singing praises, just the careful tallying of your transgressions against God and yourself. You've obviously missed the point of christianity.

tell me, what is the foundation of the catholic faith?

I got the impression long ago, while I was teaching in a Catholic school, that at least 50% (more like 70 or 80%) of the people who regularly went to church did so for one of two reasons:
1. They were forced to go by their parents.
2. Hedging their bets. They weren't serious about their faith, but, "just in case," they wanted to make sure they'd get into heaven.

99% of the time, they didn't practice what they allegedly believed.

It was a blind, illogical stab at christianity 😱. I'm sure we could turn this thread into another 500 post monster if we kept at it, but I'll settle for apologizing for trolling in your totally un"christianity vs. atheist" thread. It was an uncool thing to do. Carry on.

Just FYI, it isn't my intent to turn this into a "christianity vs atheist" thread. It was however my intent to get opinions from folks about what the Pope said.

And thanks for apologizing 🙂
