Varying Download Speeds

So the senario is that I'm at college and the network is pretty slow/bogged down. I download at about 18kb/s on firefox, but when I play guildwars or use Ares I download at about 3kb/s max. Also Counter Strike is pretty laggy as well.

My theory is that some of the ports are blacked/slowed down.

Is there anyway that I can speed my internet/ports so that my Guildwars/Counter Strike/Ares all download at at least 18 kb/s ?

I don't know too much about networking so I may be asking or assumming something stupid but any help would be greating appreciated.

Chances are your schools internet is bogged down because of people like you doing things you shouldn't be doing. if you want dedicated speed get a cable modem. besides you could get kicked out of school for P2P software. school internet is for educational purposes only.

Ok about that cable modem....this could sound really dumb and noobie, but could I buy a cable modem and then connect the school internet to the modem and then the modem to my computer? Or would that just do nothing? I dont know much about networking as you can see.
