Ok guys, I've got some NT4 questions for you... :)

Frist off, I don't have admin rights, (at work) so please keep that in mind when giving advice..

I want to install scrollwheel drivers. Some of the workstations here have them, so I know they work.. They're logitech wheelmice..

Since I don't have admin, I can't install the mouseware drivers..

I DO have all the mouseware exes and DLLs.. I've tried running that on a machine without wheel drivers, and they don't work (though the process runs).. Are there any registry settings I should look for, or DLLs outside of the mouseware folder? Or, some small 3rd party app that just makes the wheel work?

Second, is it possible to restrict the available resolutions? Something in the registry or inf files? It's really annoying when people drop these things down to 640x480x256 color.. (although I suppose I annoy them bumpnig it to 1280x1024 @ 32bit .. but oh well :D)

Third, when applying registry settings from a reg file, is it possible to DELETE registry settings? I'd like to delete all the stupid spyware, adware, and crappy programs that run on boot... All I know how to do is add registry settings..

Thanks in advance!

Without admin rights you arent going to get anywhere in NT4.
Let alone wanting to remove or add registy settings that are probably in the HKLM area.

well i must have some sort of psuedo admin rights then, because i go into the registry all the time to take things out of startup and such (although thats HKCU, i havent had a reason to go into HKLM)

run msconfig and deselect the programs that run on boot...

Me thinks that these are keyloggers, packet sniffers etc?

As a user you can remove items from the HKCU area, but not HKLM.
Most programs of these sort will be stored in HKLM, since they want them to apply to all users.

There's no utility (that I know of) that will delete a reg key, although you can replace values with regfind. Be very very careful. Editing the registry via regedit/regedt32 can be dangerous enough for an inexperienced user. Editing it via a script is a whole different beast. You can edit HKCU because you're the current user, go outside of it and you will have problems. Why don't you just ask your admin to install the mouse drivers?

MSConfig is not included in NT4.

Basically what everyone else said. Without admin rights your not gonna get very far.

Just make it easy and put in a work order saying your scroller on your mouse isn't working.

won't work. we don't have assigned seating so im left moving from machine to machine each day. if someone happens to be sitting at one of my pre-setup and all working machines, then i have to move to another, which may not have a wheel..

it shouldn't be hard to make a registry key to apply a color scheme though.. id imagine somewhere in the registry is the resolution/refresh settings as well so i could apply all the display settings with two clicks?

i just need to figure out how the wheel drivers work and i should be able to install them on other machines unless theres needed reg entries in hklm or something.. but i can access and copy the files to any part of the hd.

If I was your admin I'd talk to your boss about how you won't obey the company policies.

If you have valid complaints make them known to your IS helpdesk (or whatever you have available), don't try to circumvent them because you just end up pissing people off.

Couldn't have said it better myself. We have a few users at work that call themselves power users. More like "power abusers". Half the time they screw with the machine and then when it doesn't work they call us to fix it. And of course they always say "it just stopped working".
