various CPU problems after flash :(

ok.. heres the deal

Being the intrepid enthusiast that I am, I decided last week that the system I had running for more than a year ( ECS K7S5A + Athlon 1.2c + 384 MB PC2100 RAM) was not fast enough. As I am also a cheap bastard, I decided that overclocking was the way to go... As the motherboard BIOS did not have any options for overclocking, I decide that a flash is necessary. So, with some help from a guy on the motherboard forums( .paldo... thanks🙂 ), I manage to flash my BIOS to the latest and greatest. I look at the BIOS settings with elation, seeing that memory timings can be changed after all!! I DO NOT do any overclocking (even memory) though....

Right after this, I had to be away from the system for a few days, and when I come back, I find that it has given some wierd BSOD error message. I go online, and the microsoft KB suggests that I replace my RAM. Now, I have 2 sticks of RAM in the machine, so I pull one out , reset the BIOS, and the computer starts up. Every time the BIOS gets reset, I know I have to go and change the CPU/FSB ratio to 133/133 (it defaults to 100/100) , so I go do it. After this, the computer does not boot up. Just sticks during POST, nothing on screen...
Then I decide to see whether it would boot up at 100/100. This it does, and the computer hums along at 900mhz. 🙁 But then I try to burn a CD, and the CPU utilisation goes up to 40-50%. This of course, points me to the DMA settings. I go into the device manager, and note that the secondary IDE controller is set to PIO mode. All my attempts at changing this have ended up in failure, and I decided this could be alluded to the BIOS as well.

Now, I contact .paldo again, and he sends me over an official BIOS. I flash again, but the problems persist. I do not know what to do guys... please help me out! 🙁

ummmm... anyone?

I'm willing to try out any ideas that may come up... so please dont hesitate to suggest something...

i would definitely try flashing back to the original bios since the problems occurred after you flashed to the new bios.

uhh... nope, coz i dont have that in .iso format. My FDD does not work, and i have been depending on .paldo for .ima files containing the BIOSes which i have flashed.....

well... maybe i did not reset the CMOS right after the flash, but once I changed the settings, I could not boot, so I had to reset the CMOS... Should the CMOS be reset right after the flash???

can you load optimized or fail safe defaults ? if so try that . also i just looked at ecs's site and it looks like there is 2-3 revisons of this MB , if you got the wrong bios that would have you ALL messed up (i see yours is a "+" , but there are a few K7S5A's ).

maybe get a floppy , download the bios on and try again.
good luck
