Variance in IP's

Ok, I am somewhat confused,

I have a Linksys Router, Pacbell DSL connecting using PPPoE.
I dont use DHCP.

If I check the IP in Linksys admin for Pacbell it will report 64.161.212.202
now the problem is if I use tracert, it will show a different IP for instance 64.161.213.254 , but if I use VisualRoute it will show the correct IP.
Pinging both the real IP and the 'mock' IP indicates that one is external to the network.
Thats fine, but what I dont understand is that its the internal traces etc that come up with the wrong IP, while the external traces uses the correct IP.
hmmmmmm, I am confused, can someone shed some light on what is going on pls.
TIA

I have a theory that may, or may not be correct; a guess, a shot in the dark.🙂

When you traceroute or ping, you send ICMP packets. By default, the Linksys will reject the packets, so you may be tracing and pinging the IP address of the upstream router at your ISP, which is why you get an "external" IP address.

Now, I'm thinking that Visual uses a different type of packet (TCP? UDP?) that the Linksys may be responding to.
