Ok so I went out and purchased a wonderful onyx black Vantec NexStar 3 external Hard Disk case for my 320GB Western Digital SATA Hard disk, plugged the eSATA connector in booted into Vista and turned on the Hard Disk -- nothing. What the *hey*

So after replacing the eSATA connector and scratching my head lots, I gave up and connected the Vantec through USB2 -- guess what ...

It worked perfectly!

But how is it that a new technology such as eSATA coupled with a brand new Intel DP35DPM board and Windows Vista = no eSATA joy?

There's something for SP1 Redmond boys.

Do you even have the drivers for that SATA chip installed? Is that chip even enabled in the bios?

I have the same Vantec case, and use it regularly. It will connect via USB and Vista sees it just fine. (This is in my T60 laptop.) Then I insert an eSATA PCMCIA card and the Vantec works there as well, and is significantly faster than via USB2.

You problem may be your eSATA port - make sure it is a genuine eSATA and not just an internal port extended to the backplane.

You need to load the chipset drivers for the ESATA port and make sure its enabled, if i recall correctly that motherboard uses a Marvel chip for the ESATA ports and the ICH9 ports so you need to make sure the system is configured correctly to access the ESATA drive.
