I picked up this fan today because my 80mm case fan was starting to go bad. I got this on a whim which I never do and man do I regret it.

Vantec Stealth case fan series is 80% quieter than standard case fan. Most standard case fans noise level are 26 dBA or above, and Stealth Case fan series is only 20dBA. Double ball bearing fan designed with speed detection

That?s what Vantec has to say about this fan. So I picked it up today, got home and threw it in my case and plugged it in to my Vantec fan controller. Turned this fan on full blast and what a disappointment. It gives off this high pitch whining noise if I have the nob turned up higher than half. I hear this fan over my Panaflo 92mm CPU fan, 120mm and other 80mm fans combined when they are all turned up to high. I even think my old 80mm case fan that is going bad is more quiet than the Vantec. Well this will be going back this week that?s for sure.

Uhhhh... I think your wrong. I have 4 in my case right now on full blast and I can't hear anything. 4xStealths 1x120mm Nexus 1x120mm Panaflo... no noise. Something is wrong with yours.

I hope so. I was very disappointed when I turned this on and was hearing the loud whining noise. I'll take it back and have them replace it, hopfully the next one will be fine.

What you might do is reconnect the fan and let it run for an hour or so....you might find the high pitched noise will go away!!

When I installed the Zalman 9500 on my system after about 15 minutes I to had a whurlling noise that was very audible.....after the 30 minute mark...the noise went away forever!!

I'll plug it in and turn it up full blast and leave it running for the night and maybe in the morning it will be better. Thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortunately the name "stealth" does not apply to these fans. Some of their 80mm's have been said to be fairly quiet, but years ago I got a 92mm and a 120mm. I used them once and have been in my fan box ever since. Actually I just upgraded a friends pc and stuck him w/ the 120mm lol. He thinks its quiet. So many different perceptions of whats quiet out there so its really user dependent, but coming from a silence fanatic (moi) they are not quiet at all. If you have quiet ones cRaK then consider yourself lucky :)

I don't think anyone would think this fan is quiet. Its got that high pitch whining/whistle to it. More annoying than anything.

While the Vantec is far from the best it shouldn't be that loud. It could be you got a bad sample or maybe the PWM on the Vantec fan controller is causing the fan to make noise. Vantec is known to use a pretty bad form of PWM, but you would think a Vantec controller would work with a Vantec Fan.

Having said that for 80-92mm the Panaflo L1A is unbeatable.

Well I left this running on high all night and woke up and it was still whining. I'll be taking it back sometime this week.

Operandi: I was going to pick up a 80mm Panaflo but they were all sold out and wouldn't have any in for a week.

I have never ever heard of a fan needing a "breaking in period" but it would appear that sometimes that is the case.
Logically NOT for a few days but maybe an hour or so before you condemn that particular fan to being RMA`s...lol
