Lol SOE's still up to their old tricks? When will people learn?

So providing extra content, improved visuals, and bug fixes is a bad thing?

Ckent, you should be banned from any thread that mentioned SOE.

About a year ago I was thinking about gettin a station account pass, mainly to toy around with SWG but also to let me load up some of the other titles that I probably wouldn't have if required to individually play. Then when I started checking on it I found the price had been jacked up a nice 50% with $13 added and went on my way without looking back.

I really don't know why they charge so much for it. Does their log on server allow the same account to connect to the different games at one time? Else you are still just playing 1 at a time and the price should be much closer (as it used to be) to the standard monthly payment.

I *think*, though I could be mistaken, that it only lets you play one game at a time. I can't remember - a friend and I tried this out a few years ago. It may be the case we were both trying to log into the same game though.

With that said - raising the fee for added Tier 1 quality games I wouldn't have a problem with. But when you look what the station account gets you, coupled with the fact that you still have to actually purchase the games themselves (and most of the older ones can't be had anywhere except the SOE Store - and for an insanely exorbitant price for what they are)... it's not worth it.

I was commenting on their pricing, as are others in the thread. Try to follow along.

EVE Online adds content, graphics, etc all the time yet they don't charge for the expansion packs - its all included in the $15/month fee. Personally I think SONY should follow that model.

That said, I would have to agree that the price for the station pass if out of line for the games you get access to. The less said about the abomination of SWG the better and all that's left is EQ, EQII, and Vanguard. The other games (Planetside anyone?) aren't worth looking at.

Yet eve sucks just as bad as most SOE games do. So I'd say it's par for the course.

The one thing that makes eve absolutely NOT worth it's monthly pricetag is that you can not "level up" at your own pace, fast or slow. Eve locks you in to time-based skill training, basically ensuring they get a minimum about of subscription dollars before you have enough skill points to play well enough to survive more than 2.85 seconds. At least with all the other subscription games, the limitation is however fast you can gain experience, which is only limited by how much time YOU want to invest in the game.

I was surprised when I saw on the G4 scrawl that there was a new SWG expansion coming.

Shouldn't be a surprise. There's even a new Ultima Online expansion coming.

FYI, if any of you wants to give this game a try with the latest updates, you can get it for <$5 right now at GoGamer's 48 hour madness sale, includes a month free. That is almost what I payed for it (I bought it at a local salvage store for ~$3, sealed. Currently it is a nice game, just not enough people playing on the PvP server).

Keep an eye out in your inboxes too. SOE has a habit of dropping a free week or two (or month) to previous subscribers when a large update comes out.

They sent me a package in the mail one time, it was odd to see mail addressed to my EQ name coming in the mail. Had an EQ2 poster in it with a free 14-day key to reactivate my EQ2 account.

I have been playing EQ1 with my GF, and been itching to try something new. EQ1 is just so dated, and the fun factor is gone in that game for me (played it too long.)

I started looking at other games on MMORPG.com and browsed the forums, such as Chronicles of Spellborn, Runes of Magic, Darkfall, and then out of curiousity (because I played in Beta), Vanguard SOH.

Chuckling I went into that forum, mainly because it was rated very good on MMORPG. I'm like HMm. WTF? The game was horrible in 2006 when I played beta, and from what I understood at the time, on its deathbed today and wondering why they haven't shut it down. Everybody was talking about it was the best PvE game on the market in that forum.

So I decided to get a sony pass to play EQ1 and then try out Vanguard. To my suprise, I had a Vanguard account, even though I never bought the game. Since I played in beta they gave it to me for free. So, I installed it, and tried it out.

Wow. The game is much better than it was. While the tutorial is still rather "quest centric", I actually was having some fun playing. The atmosphere was great and sucked me into the game, the gameplay is better than alot of games out there today. THe quests are still the same as any other game, delivery, kill x mobs, do this errand, which is sort of annoying, but for some reason things just click for me in this game. It seems quite solid today.

I urge anybody who has maybe tried it in the past or has an interest in MMORPG's at all, to try out the Vanguard 14 day free trial. Don't have much to lose. But I was suprised. It was better than I thought it would be. This is the game I hoped for when it was released 2 years ago.

Its very rare for SOE to kill an MMO.

Edit - Clarification: By kill, I mean to terminate the game's servers not ruin the game play.

You can't ruin something that's already broken.

Though SOE has made significant improvements to Vanguard, I have never seen an MMO fail so quickly. When your MMO falls face first into the pavement on launch day, recovery is nearly impossible.

FANBOI ON

I one of the few who has been in Vanguard since release. Played UO, EQ1, EQ2, Ascheron Call 2, Conan, WOW etc. I am kind of torn on the lack of success of the game.

On one hand I don't play with pick-up groups and do Dungeon crawls with 4 RL friends. We have dungeons all to ourselves and can do what we want when we want. The world is big and beautiful, the dungeons are great and the classes are designed so you have a role in a group (like EQ1).

The lack of sucess means any development is slow to be implemented. The team is small so things take time. If the game was bigger than more resources would be thrown at it.

For what its worth I think Vanguard is the best PVE game out there today (ducks from WOW fans). If you enjoy old fashion dungeon crawls in big sprawling dungeons then this might be the game to try. I hope they can have enough subscribers to keep the game going and to continue to add new content.

FANBOI OFF

What Vanguard could use is an expansion. This would allow them to introduce significant new content, providing bug fixes and optimizations, while at the same time providing a justification to the suits to expand the development team in anticipation of profit.

It seems alot of players are trying out the game according to what I see on the free trial. Most of them are saying "Wow this game rocks! I love this game." The only negative comment was from some guy who did the trial, time ran out, and came back and his character was missing, he seemed upset. I just finished the free trial island on 2 of my characters, and I've been going to the main land. There seems to be a nice solid population from what I can tell so far.

I'd say the game's population on my server (serradon) is what EQ1 was before WoW came out. In other words, pretty healthy from what I can tell. Alot of chat going on, people grouping up, and I see people in every location I go to (maybe not in the forrest killing monsters) but most towns and outposts have people in them running around and doing things.

I think a vanguard expansion would be great. I heard they are raising the level cap (to 55 from 50) and are adding AA points to the game. But a real expansion (not necessarily need to add more continents, but just fill in more of the already existing game adding more raiding content, etc) would help get things going again.
