'I'm not sure why they didn't run'
Photos from deceased parents' camera returned to grieving sons

The Knill brothers of North Vancouver have received an "almost wonderful" set of photos taken by their deceased parents as the devastating southeast Asian tsunami swept toward them.

"I'm not sure why they didn't run," said Patrick Knill, 28. "The first few pictures show a line in the distance and within five minutes the wave was on them. They would have only had a few seconds by the time they realized what was happening."

Whoa.

*disclaimer* I searched, got nothing.

This reminds me of pictures that a guy took as the volcano erupted in Washington.. while back...
He died also.., but cool pictures survived..

By pic 4 (waves crashing as tall as boats in the water) I'd have been going:

"Oh sh*t, honey!! RRRRUUUUNNNN!!!!"

everyone in those pictures was on vacation. they figured, this must happen all the time. they had no idea how big that wave really was until it was too late.

I'll say it Goddamn it, that is one sad story. Have a heart for pete's sake. geez

I think that part of the problem is the scale of the tsunami. It probably looked so big that it seemed to be moving slowly. At least until it was close enough that it was too late.

And let's face it, before this happened, how many of US knew that receding water was a warning sign for a tsunami? I only know because I saw a documentary about a famous tsunami that killed a bunch of people 20 years ago. Some fool photographer stood on top of a bridge and thought he would be safe. I don't remember if they ever found the body.

What happened is that before the wave hit, the water level got really low for a few minutes. Curious people were walking out onto land that was the ocean shortly before. They didn't know that the reason behind the low water level was a wave that was forming off the coast.

Also, the tsunami isn't a great big wall of water that crashes down suddenly, it's more like the water level rising over the course of a couple of minutes. In the videos I watched, the waves kept on breaking and the water level continued rising for a minute or so. That's understandable since the wave isn't a tall, narrow wave, but rather a relatively short, long wave (miles long).

Exactly, if you've seen the videos people took, you really can't tell what's about to happen. It just looks like some big waves are coming in. By the time most people realized what was going on, it was far too late to get away.

Well, this looks a bit more than an above-average wave.

It's hard to tell from a picture that gives you nothing to compare it with. I think the videos demonstrate it pretty well since you see how everything unfolds.

People tend to think it's a single gigantic wave that breaks and destroys everything in one swift instant. But it's not- it's more of a quick rise in water level, a flash flood.

At first the water level drops and people are curious and walk down to the water's edge. Then the waves on the beach start coming up slightly higher than normal and people stand around wondering what's going on. Then the water is at their ankles and they are confused, but not afraid yet. But it keeps rising, and by the time they're afraid it's already too late. The water continues to rise and spill over everything and nobody can escape in time.

Watch this video and see how it unfolds. The water keep rising for about 2 minutes, and I'm guessing that he started filming it only after he knew something was up.
