The game gives me an error every time I try installing it. Thinking I had a bad disk I went to eb games and exchanged the game but still receive errors when installing. I've tried defragging, using different optical drives, scandisk, changing dma settings, all the suggestions on Activision's support page, but nothing seems to have any effect on the game.

Strangely enough, the game installs fine on my laptop and plays well enough (for a laptop).

Any ideas why the game wont install on my desktop?

Do you have any virtual drives like clone cd, alcohol 120 or daemon tools installed?? If so that could be the problem. Like warcrow says..post the error message.

The error message is "error 1335, Cabinet file xxx (changes every time) is corrupt and cannot be read"

All my drivers are up to date and I haven't installed any virtual drive software.

I know the discs are fine because I can install the game on my notebook. I suspect the game's copy protection is at fault and isn't meshing well with something on my pc.

Dunno how the installation works for this game, but try copying the contents of the CD to your hard drive, then running the installer from there.

Retry this, but find someone to send you the file it is missing to replace it with. Or call the company and tell them you aren't getting off the phone until the game is installed.

Nope.

I did have dvd shrink and dvd decrypter installed but I removed those thinking they might be the cause. It had no effect.

Google "error 1335"

After checking out some of the links, I'm betting your CD is dirty enough that the optical drive in your current desktop cant read it, but in the notebook is fine. Try cleaning the disk again.

I've tried returning the game to get my money back but the lady at EB Games told me she can't give me a refund because the product's been opened and that the only thing I can do is exchange the game. I said fine and informed her that I'm going to keep exchanging the game until I get one that works. So if anyone's interested in this game there's going to be several opened boxes for sale in Mesa, AZ.

Well I'll be...

I tried installing again only to have my computer reboot half-way through the first cd. One sigh and several expletitves later I tried again only to have the error message pop up in the middle of the third cd. Sigh. Not wanting to start all over yet again I alt-tab into the desktop and enable dma during the installation; no go, error message stayed. Then I disabled my pioneer 108 through device manager, put the cd back in, pressed retry, and the installation finished. Extremely unorthodox I'll admit, but it worked.

Now I have to see if the game will play...

*fingers crossed*

Yeah, tell me about it. The weird thing is I tried installing the game before I even attached my dvd writer.

Aside from some weird textures and bad performance the game works just fine. Only took 2 days and over 50 attempts.:(

I could have installed and finished a game in the time it took just to install this. It better be one hell of a game.
