I'm seeing a lot of advertisements for this new oil on Speed channel. Its recycled oil and they're billing it as better than brand new oil? Does anyone actually believe that? I'm going to put oil that's already been put through its useful life and has now been refreshed in my car? Riiight.

I can't see anybody buying this stuff. Am I off base here? I was wondering what the garage thinks about it.

For those of you who haven't heard of it, I googled it for you.

The oil itself doesn't wear out, just the additive package. The NextGen stuff has multiple posts at BITOG and UOA's, seems like a perfectly fine oil from all the talk about it over there. I'd have no hesitation to run it in my car.

Problem is, the sale price of it is the same as new oil...

And therein lies the rub. If I can get new oil for the same price, why use recycled? I guess so you can have that warm fuzzy about saving the planet? All the smug Prius owners will be running it in their hybrids I guess.

I love the planet but I won't be running it unless it's half the price of 'regular' / new oil. Sorry, economics still apply to saving the planet.

Why would it have to be half the price? It meets all the same specs as the new stuff and has had its additive package replenished so there's no reason why it won't work just as well. If you "love the planet" as you say you'd at least consider it if it was the same price.

If Valvoline cared about the planet they'd sell it cheaper than new oil. They must not, so I'm not about to increase their profit margin based on a guilt trip from a bunch of greedy bungholes.

They're saying it's better than new oil because it uses less resources. Other than that, it should be pretty much the same as anything else.

I do think that it would have made sense for them to sell at reduced price until recycled oil is common. I would guess it probably costs them more (if for no other reason than not as much economies of scale), and they're actually selling it evenly priced. They might have done some focus group research that shows people are willing to pay the same. Or definitely they could be greedy assholes too.

Without more knowledge and more feedback I wouldn't go for it at even prices. Seeing proof that it performs the same, and finding out that it costs them more I'd consider it then, or if they reduce the price.

What's the recommended change interval? Same as the petro based? At twice the price of dino, it's going to take some convincing for most to change to that.

I support NextGen entirely.
If it were available locally to me it's all I would use. It is the way of the future, and you're retarded if you don't agree.

i got a 5-qt bottle for 10 bucks at auto zone. otherwise id have gotten a different one. it didnt work well in my truck, but im still not sure it was the oil or the other factors that made it not effective. but i knew it was destined to only be in the truck for a couple weeks, since i was just flushing it.

it seemed to be a bit on the thin side, and at idle kept going under the 5psi limit. thought it was the pump at first, but changing the oil stopped the idle issue.
