just read on the steam news thingy that valve will be releasing HL2😀eathmatch properly with some new weapons and some competition winning maps

and also a new level based on Highway 17 or something that will incorporate some new game play along with HDR to the source engine. they will be releasing the system requirements soon

shouldnt be, afterall they did showcase the HDR on Radeon cards and it looked alot like that HDR Demo that RHTIBL or whatever it is, so it should run on any SM2 card with enough grunt.

having said that it would be hilarious to see Ati have valve implement a Radeon only HDR. lol what a kick in the teeth that would be

See, they didn't even finish the game. They released it without a lot of crap. Twas still good, but still F-ed up.

they hoping HDR = replay value

Kinda doubtful considering not only that that is a stupid idea, but they are just makeing one new map with it, not adding it to the orignal game. Seems more like they are just hoping to keep their engine current by adding more features.

I haven't played HL2 yet, I have the best hardware for it, and I'll wait for these new things to come out before I play it.

But like I said, they aren't adding aything to the game, the new HDR is in a new map made to be played seperate from the original game. No reason to wait.

There's always *something* you could add to a game (or any piece of software). If you kept working on it until it had every feature you could possibly think of, you'd never release it. It's not like HDR is a key feature for the game, and the rest sounds like a typical patch to improve multiplayer (which almost always happens 3-6 months after the release of ANY game, once people come up with better maps and balance tweaks).

Personally, I'm happy when a company puts out new free content and enhancements for a game. I didn't hear a lot of complaining about HDR/PS2.0b/PS3.0 being added to FarCry in a patch. How is this any different?

Well seeing as the X800s dont suuport a 32bit FP Precision i do not believe they can do HDR effectively, or properly.

Correct me if i am wrong however.

24-bit precision is really plenty for most HDR applications. Check out the various HDR demos you can get off the web.

The issue with FarCry's HDR is that they did it through an NV40-specific feature, with a floating-point framebuffer (ATI only supports integer framebuffers). There are other ways to do HDR, though, by using pixel shaders.

People bitch about HL2 and CS:s not being 100% complete..

how long did the original cs take to reach version 1.6????????????? Of I forgot, "you" never played 1.6! (well some of you did)

Would you rather have just waited 1-2 more years for a game and play it at what "they" think is a final product?

Or would you rather play a product that can be critiqued (sp), refined and enhanced as you enjoy playing the great game that it is?

I'll take option b.

Ahh good old CS Beta days, when weapons didn't dissappear after a round and the knife was one hit kill. 😀

note that the 9800 is capable of a form of HDR but nobody as yet has coded for it. i would place bets that valve will be the first since ATI pumped alot of money into valve during production. IMO this would be an awesome feature

I really enjoyed hl2, but replay is not for me. I am going through withdrawal and have actually been playing half life source. A new game on that engine using hdr would suit.

Valve said they are showcasing HDR in one level, maybe later on they can incorporate it into all the levels, and they just want to show us a teaser of what they can do with HDR.

And they said they are adding this to the engine, so anything new thats coming out for HL2, or CS, any mods and stuff, they will be able to add that in.

What on earth are you talking about? There's plenty of people that have coded for it. I can list a few off the top of my head, like rthdribl

OK well how about a real game now? So far there is only one game on the market with support of HDR of any type which is Far Cry and it only works on Geforce 6 series.

I thought that was what this thread was about? Not Ati / Nvidia
