I know for sure that one of my sexternal drives keeps giving me 'write failed' errors so I wll have to have it replaced, but the software in question was on my OS drive, an internal WD 120GB SE

Occasionally, when Windows is bored, it'll move program files to any drive that it sees as "permanently attached"

This is TOTALLY undocumented, but I've observed it several times since SP2. It's highy possible that Windows elected to move your Valve stuff to your external drive.

Not mine. I tried using that software when my hard drive went corrupt, and the program would crash upon detecting my hard drive.
R-studio is much better for a fraction of the cost. It recovered all my files.

You could also try "GetDataBack" works well for recovering files.

Is all the valve info in the registry still? Still have the icons?

EVERYTHING is gone. The omnlything left is the Valve folder icon on the start menu (empty) and the half-life icon on my ObjectBar thingy
