So, as you can see... there is two from the top looking like they might be missing... Then there is one on the side towards the trunk of the car below the valve cover that might be where you put a bolt? Who knows... Car works great even though it might be missing some bolts.

Am I missing some (which is strange...) or is this normal? It's a D16Y8 engine.

Here are some D16Y8 engines that might or might not have them!

Strangeness...

dude, you need to join a honda forum like hondaswap.com or honda-tech.com, they'd be much better suited for answering your question..

Btw, that's a cleaaaaan engine bay!

I cannot speak to the Honda engine specifically, but I know as far as Ford goes, as the model matures they begin testing to do material cost saves. On the 4.6L and 5.4L they deleted a number of cam cover bolts at a signicant cost save (think millions). So I wouldn't get too worried about it. If you've never had them off, they were probably not supposed to be there.

Yeah, for those two other engine bays it is... They're ridiculous. They probably took apart the whole thing and cleaned everything. I'm not that informed about taking apart and putting together car engines so... yeah...

There's also the chance that when assembling the engine, those holes were used to hold the engine up.

I wouldn't worry about it since the holes are threaded, meaning they were used to hold something on top of the valve cover and not meant to hold the valve cover to the head. The one on the block was probably used to hold the engine up as zerocool84 mentioned.

In the picture here it looks like somebody relocated the ground strap from the bottom right corner of the valve cover to where it's bolted (the thick black wire ending in bare wire).

I'm familiar with this car. It's normal. The valve cover bolts are the five you see on top.

I can't recall ever seeing an engine that did not have holes that were unused. Many engines are used across several car lines and those holes may be utilized in those applications. The holes may not be used at all, but are designed in for future flexibility for attaching or mounting whatever may come along.

My guess would be that is where they bolted an attachment point on to use with an engine hoist.

You can look at pretty much any engine and find unused bolt-holes somewhere

Nothing missing here. If there was a missing bolt, the oil pressure will cause a leak right away when the engine is hot. It looks like you got a tiny leak on the back side corner. Barely see it. I would change it on your next oil change if you have time. If not, no biggie.
