Valve announces new L4D1 DLC coming in September

G4TV - Valve just announced that a new DLC pack named Crash Course will be released for Left 4 Dead this September.

The two new maps will be inserted into the middle of the campaign between No Mercy and Death Toll and includes Survival and co-op. It also will "deliver a complete Versus mode experience in just 30 minutes, resulting in a streamlined version of the game's existing Versus campaigns. A recharge timer for infected teammates has also been added, and item spawn behavior has changed for more balanced gameplay."

So, what's the controversial part in all of this? PC users get it free while 360 users will have to pay 560 MS Space Bucks ($7) to partake in the festivities.

Commence uproar!

This is DLC done wrong. Then again, from what I understand this is how the map packs work for both (or one?) of the COD games. Regardless of the controversy, $7 seems like a lot for two maps.

I'm done with L4D and just waiting for L4D2 at this point.

Don't play L4D but that is straight up wrong...

Course, I remember in Gears 1 when Cliffy said he didn't want to charge for DLC and M$ "made him" and now he's putting out DLC packs every few months and charging what, $15 each?

Actually, Epic was charging $10 each for the maps. The latest one was $15 because it included a deleted single-player chapter on top of maps. But they did redeem themselves by selling all the map packs that have been released for $20 which is a pretty good value.

This Destructoid post certainly makes it sound like MS is the one to blame for the cost of the 360 L4D DLC.

I did ask Valve if it would be free but was told it could not be confirmed at the time, due to being in talks with Microsoft. Luckily, the press release we just received states it will cost 560 MS Points (boo Microsoft!), and be free on the PC.

$10 each for map packs of 3-4 maps. The new $15 pack includes 7 new maps in addition to the single-player chapter. The $20 one is indeed a good value since it gets you all 19 maps plus the single-player chapter--hard to complain about that one but people always find a way.

Yep, it sounds like MS does not want to start a precedent of free DLC.

I remember Gabe Newell saying he wanted all DLC that Valve released to be free even on console but MS didn't care for that much like what Cliff said. I think if Valve had their way it would be free.

There's also the issue of the 360 version being a really shoddy port.

I guess this means I'll have to get the PC version next time around.

Why can't they just release a title update for the game that happens to include additional content?

Is the motorcycle patch for Burnout Paradise free on the 360? It is on the PS3.

Yep. The DLC shared between games on the PS3 and 360 are the same price (sales excluded). The problem has been between DLC priced on PC (where the devs control the price) and DLC priced on consoles (where the console makers have the say when it comes to price).

PC is free, because it's to make up for releasing L4D2 so soon? So all those angry PC gamers, with their tense sphincters can relax a little.

It's free because Valve wants it to be free. Microsoft, on the other hand, wants people to pony up for it. Old story, nothing to see here.

yeah, I know. I have many steam games, and Valve is gamer friendly. It was sarcastic humor. and yes I have L4D on pc, so none of this affects me. I stopped playing since Dec? Jan? I forgot.

I like everything, except the "streamlined" 30 minute versus. I dunno, it might be okay to deal with the rage quitters,.. but I like a good long game. Either way I can't wait... I'm gonna love more L4D stuff to keep me tied over until 2.

Another reason why FPS on a PC is better than a console. We used to get things free all the time... until consoles started going online. Same thing happened in CoD4 among others.

This. I would be gaming a lot more on the Xbox if Microsoft wasn't so damn greedy with all of their DLC.

Destructoid gets an exclusive preview of Crash Course. Spoilers are in the story so I won't copy & paste.

One interesting point about the levels being shorter, Valve is saying they were finding that the campaigns were too long for multiplayer matches and people would drop out halfway through. So Valve created a shorter but more intense campaign.

Personally, I have found that people don't quit because they are bored half way through. They usually quit because their team isn't to experienced and rage quit because they are losing.
