Value RAM -- Which is a better bet?

I noticed that one of the 512Mb sticks of Mushkin is $79, but is 2.5-4-4. People seem to say they can go lower, but they don't really say. Does anyone know how low those timings can go at DDR400? I won't be setting them ultra-low, but I use it as a base to find out which one probably is of the higher quality.

Kingmax is a brand I haven't used, like Mushkin, but that I also know is a good brand. I noticed that it has a higher rating from voters, and that they seem to have great experiences with timings and overclocking, but you should never take their word for it. Does anyone use Kingmax RAM that likes it here? It is only a few dollars more, and I'm thinking that maybe I should get that instead.

I'm going to buy a stick later today (it is 12:41AM Central Time here), and I can't decide :)

The model #'s are CT6464Z40B for 512MB Crucial DDR400 (for good measure), MPXC22D-38 for the Kingmax and 991093 for the Mushkin memory. What do you think?

Personally, since I do not overclock I will take the Kingmax but if funds are really low, then I'll take the mushkins. The crucial's are obviously good except I can use the 20 bux for other hardware.

I've had good luck with Kingmax.
Of course I've had good luck with Crucial, Kingston KVR, and Samsung too, but since the Kingmax is cheaper... :)

I like the Corsair XMS memory. But I've had their "Value Select" cause me problems on an NF2 MB.

I kept getting random errors and locks. I tried flashing the BIOS, updating Windows, relaxing timings, upgrading the CPU cooling, changing PS, even underclocking the system. Nothing fixed the random errors and locks except changing the RAM.
After that, everything went smooth. ;)

Oops, I just voted for Crucial 'cause that's what I have but I didn't see the $96 price. Where did you get that from? I just bought another 512MB last week on newegg for $78.

Thats from Crucial's website, can you believe that? I put that in there just to toss out how rediculous that price is. Does anyone know why it is $96? I'd like to get Crucial because I always use them, but man...I could use that $20 extra for something else (like GAS, lol)!

Blain, i've heard of that too and that is why I left Corsair's Value Select off of my question ;).

Well, I think I might just get the Kingmax then :). It seems to be the best value, anyone agree? It has a good price, and apparently nobody hates Kingmax. I noticed that the Crucial is $88, but this Kingmax seems to be great, and cheaper too. Cheaper is better :) Unless there is something about that 2.5-4-4 Mushkin that makes it fabulous that nobody is telling me :p.

I doubt the Mushkin would be bad stuff. If I were in your shoes, I'd probably pick it.

Well my friend has a pair, and it does exactly what I want. I agree with you Avalon, and I will probably grab the Mushkin on Friday.

Newegg's price for Crucial RAM is always cheaper. The price when up a lot over the weekend for some reason though.

Haha im in the same situation..... I've always used Crucial Ram so i don't know much about other companies...

As of now i have no plans to overclock my new Athlon 64 3200+ / Asus K8V SE Deluxe, but my PC2100 is slowing me down...

Im leaning towards the Muskin, Corsair Value (which from reading this thread sucks), Geil, and Crucial (which was $78 last week).

I may hold off for the crucial to drop again, but what do you guys like?

Mushkin has great RAM. Their customer service is OK, not great. I have made purchases from than 4 or 5 times, and I have never gotten a confirmation email or tracking number like the Web site says you are supposed to, but the memory is excellent.

I have 2 sticks of that in this computer, running at 2.5-3-3-8 without any problems at all.

Edit: My rig is an A64 3000+, MSI K8N Neo Platinum, R9800 Pro, etc., etc...

It booted up on the first try without any problems, however, I couldn't get CnQ to work properly until I updated the BIOS to 1.20 (from 1.10).

Edit2: I also have a stick of this in my little brother's computer, a Dell Dimension 4550 (or something..) It came with a P4 2.53 (533 fsb) and 256MB of PC2700.. I put in a stick of the Corsair Value select PC3200 512MB (2.5CL) and it runs at 2-3-3-7 or something close to that.

Off topic b ut you can try looking for the Kingston valueRAM with Hynix D43 chipsets. I don't know if it's still available around there but they are usually on the PC2700 ValueRAM. I got a pair and it ran up to 2.5 -3 -3 - 6 at DDR420. Not bad for 100 bucks a pair (1gB).

What can that mushkin probably do though? It says 2.5-4-4....do you think it could do 2.5-3-3-6 or so? A buddy of mine has Geil RAM (I just found that out) and he never has problems. Thinking of the price, and the fact that it seems to be pretty good, i'm leaning towards that a little. I just simply can't find anything online that mentions what it is capable of. I don't mean like how far it OCs, but rather how low the timings can go @ DDR400 and at what voltage.
