Value PC for Grandparents

Alright, my grandparents are looking for a cheap new computer and I thought I would give them a quote.

Look at the following, let me know how I can slash prices. I've arranged the following from three companies, one of which is running a free shipping offer so maybe these can be found cheaper elsewhere.

Of course I will donate my time, effort, and software 🙂.

Fong Kai FK611 Micro ATX Case ($45.00)
Value Ram 128MB SDRAM ($29.00)
AMD Duron 800MHz ($55.99)
Samsung 17'' SyncMaster 753DF ($183.95)
Asus A7VI-VM MATX Socket A ($99.95)
Yamaha YSTM101 Speakers ($24.95)
Cnet CN5614RV 56K PCI Modem ($14.99)
Linksys Etherfast 10/100 PCI ($16.95)
Quantum 10GB Fireball Plus AS HD ($78.95)
Creative 52X CDROM ($46.95)
Teac 3.5? Floppy Drive ($17.95)
Logitech Mouse Wheel ($14.95)
Microsoft Internet Keyboard ($21.95)

Total: $651.53

Good idea... I might just knock that down to Duron 700MHz

I like the motherboard with integrated video and audio though.

Before you buy all that, you should really check out the For Sale forums. Just last week I saw a bare bones AMD Duron 600 system for like 250.00 for everything except ram, hdd and monitor. You can save yourself a lot of cash that way. Just letting you know!

Heh! My grandparents can't work the factory car radio or their cordless phone. I end up getting calls all the time about the tv remote control too. My head hurts just thinking about suggesting a pc. 😉

letting friends and family members know that you're a computer guy generally isn't a good policy. i would only fix hot chicks computers. just a personal policy.

Do they need an ethernet card and a modem? Most older people probably won't want or need broadband. Also, you may want to look into another cd-rom as alot of people have had trouble with failing creative ones. Other than that, it looks like a great system for just basic use.
