Value board for an AMD1055T processor

Putting together a simple rig with plenty of ram for the new six core processors. I don't need anything really fancy, have no desire to overclock at all, so here's what's important:

4 slots for ram so that I can cheaply run 8-12GB of memory.
125W processor support (namely support for Thuban)
PCI-E 16x slot that I can boot from for a RAID card, but also support something like an ATI 5850 for windows 7
PCI-E 1x port that's far enough away from the 16x slot that a dual slot card can go in and still allow the 1x to be used
RAID 0/1 supporting SATA ports

Looking for recommendations 🙂.

Oh and decent onboard video is preferred.

I like those two alot, but the hybrid system (not using it currently) of my gf's Jetway HA07-Ultra mainboard has been atikmdag hell in windows 7. She can hardly do anything that's 3D driven, I'm really afraid to go back into a board like that unless I can see some people having success with windows 7. I never used the hybrid feature (card+IGP) but the system hated that IGP's sideport until it was just a dedicated card.

Keep in mind though, that these "budget boards" may not boot with the x6 processors unless their bios is flashed with an older processor, especially those 785 chipsets. I'd aim for an 880g+ to save yourself the restocking fees. Oh and avoid Assrock.

I'm thinking of getting this, but really wanna wait until newegg refunds the amount for the 2 last AM3 motherboards i bought from them.

I never thought of that, sounds like a good idea. I have an X4 9950 that I could flash with, but i'd rather have the build on the newer end of things than upgrading old. If you don't get to this before I do, I'll update you.

Meantime, taking more suggestions!

You will want an aftermarket Heatsink and Fan. The Retail Fan is freakin annoying. I just installed one of these:

Silenx IXC-120HA2 LGA1366/LGA775/AM3 i7 Direct Touch Heatpipe Cooler 900-1700RPM 9-24DBA 120MM Fan for $35. Simple install, plenty of clearance over the ram, and is nice an quiet.

I'm already used to a 9950BE processor that's 125W, same as this hexacore, is it all that bad? It'll have a NS160S RAID cage in it as well with a fairly loud 80mm fan, and a LSI raid card with a 60mm fan on it.

At 100% CPU the 1055T Fan whines like a vacuum. It was so loud I had to shutdown BOINC at night so I could sleep with the PC going in the next room. Wouldn't be surprised if my neighbours could hear it through the walls. You can try it, as I don't know how loud your Case Fans are, but I suspect they are not as loud as the CPU fan, which btw seems to be a 60mm which ran 6500RPM a good part of the time. Keep it in mind, a good and quiet HS/Fan is affordable if you can't hack it.

Got the MSI 890gx board with the recent Fry's combo deal. Had to update the bios with a flash drive to get the processor to run windows setup. This was as easy as downloading the BIOS file on to a USB drive and plugging it in and then selecting update BIO from BIOS menu. Piece of cake.

Haven't used the onboard GPU but there are OC settings for GPU OC if you want to. The heatpipe cooling of the MOSFETS, chipset and GPU look to be good quality. 1055T fan is loudish, swapping over my arctic cooling heatsink ASAP.

If you run to Fry's within the next few hours if you're on the West Coast of the USA, then you can get one of two 1055T combos for $225 and $250 respectively with an MSI mATX 890GX and Biostar 890FX ATX board respectively. The MSI is sold out at most Fry's.

I don't have a Fry's or MC around (nearest is 5.5 hours away). I'll have one I can go to in Chicago in about 1 week from now. So I think I'll hold off my purchase until I can step into MC there, and if that's not good, it'll be an e-tailer.
