Hi All, going to build a PC and I just want to validate that the compontents i have selected will work together and there is no magic bullet i am missing:
What it will be for:

  • Running Virtual machines with Oracle software – for this i need 16GB minimum (jeez!)
  • Video and Photo editing (HD Video and RAW photos)
Am in Australia and going to order parts in next few days

Thinking this 16GB Ram: G.Skill F3-12800CL9Q-16GBRL (4x4GB) DDR3 PC12800 16GB

This SSD (i'll have a few 2TB drives i will put in for data):
Crucial M4 SSD 256GB
Idea behind this bit bigger one is i can put a 100GB Virtual machine on it or photos i am working on before they get archived onto the mechanical drives

CPU: i7 2600K
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=16416
Motherboard: ASRock Z68 Pro3 Motherboard B3
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=17350
Graphics card: VTX3D Radeon HD6790 1GB
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?...ducts_id=17296
just really picked at pretty much random as a mid level card..
CPU Cooler? – would nt have a clue abotu what to get
I already have PSU and case/dvd/monitor etc
If anyone would be about to tell me if this will all work or if i should chnage something that would be great.
thanks

Yes, all those parts that you have listed will work together just fine. I would like to suggest having 2x128GB SSDs running OS and scratch disk separately as opposed to having a single 256GB SSD for OS + scratch disk.

As SSDs NAND are prone to wear and tear, having separate SSDs might isolate the degradation of the scratch disk to only one of the 128GB SSD. The extra $19 might also be worth it if you intend to RAID 0 both SSDs to have nearly double the read/write speed and have a combined space of 256GB.

RAM seems a bit pricy, but I don't know what prices are like overall in Australia.

Other than that, I would say to seriously consider just using the Sandy Bridge IGP (its quite good) and forgoing the discrete GPU altogether. Something as weak as a 6790 isn't good enough for real gaming anyway.
