Vaio Notebook Cooling Fan Never ON

I just discovered, after 2 years (!!), that I have a cooling fan. I have never heard it running, and the box gets pretty hot.

My Power Profile for Fan is set to performance and I have never seen an error message at boot indicating a problem with the fan.

I recall that a friend sent me a small program called "fanrun" to run the fan manually on my old Toshiba. Is there one out there for a sony? Is this a software issue, or will I have to rip the box open?
