Is it safe to vacuum out a USB keyboard and mouse with a regular vacuum cleaner? I heard vacuums generate a lot of static electricity; do I need to ground anything?
Yes, it's safe. You can also use canned "air" to blow out crumbs. Wipe it down with a antibacterial wipe to clean all of the grungy stuff that builds up on the keys.
You can also get those giant brushes women use to put blush on their face. A new one of course, they work great at removing dust from keyboards, mobos, LCD screens, etc. without damaging the components and won't produce static.
That is exactly what I do. Clorox Disinfecting Wipes (75 to a can so lasts a long time) and a can of Dust Remover from the local Walmart for about $2.50 or so
I got myself a set of vac tools for computers - they are static proof, and can attach to any vacuum. My favorite is the little Oreck tank model that came free when the wife got their XL upright. Canned air is also good, but you must hold the can upright or else it can spew liquid propellent drops. The tools are great - especially the small brush that can get between keys.
BTW - an old fashioned shaving brush is also a handy tool.
I like to give my work keyboard the full teardown every few months, pop off all the keys, canned air, brushes and clorox wipes. Takes me a while, but it keeps the keyboard nice.
All I do at home is canned air and a magic eraser, taking the keys off my slim keyboard at home is a chore and can break the scissors.
