$1.20 to $1.30 = 1 Euro has been pretty typical for the past 7 years or so. It has occasionally dipped lower, but has also gone as high as $1.60 = 1 Euro in 2007. So no, it won't kill him.

at this second, $1 = 0.77 Euro.

not expensive.

and just b/c it's not on the euro, doesn't mean it's "cheaper." The Lat (Latvia) is worth 2x the Dollar. That's more valuable than the Euro, more valuable than the Pound. By your logic, no human could afford to live there, much less travel.

But they can. Why? Cost of Living.

Your arguments suck balls. (was in Latvia 2 years ago)

Go wherever you want, I'm not stopping you. There are a lot of place to visit in the world. Personally, I would avoid places that have very unfavorable exchange rates. That's all I was trying to say.

Japan has an extremely favorable exchange rate. But it's FUCKING EXPENSIVE everywhere.

Are you starting to understand the narrow-minded retardedness of your argument? ....this applies to 100% of your posts, of course.

Sit down and take a deep breath. You're going to pop an artery if you keep this up.

The OP was talling about Europe, how did Japan come into this discussion?

Despite Zin's warning, we are going to be in Dublin for part of our trip.

We are landing and staying in London to start, then heading to Scotland and Ireland.

Dublin does sound expensive, but oh well

yeah. we were there for a few days summer 08. (it was our entrance and exit airport). ~$1500 to fly from Chicago to Dublin, about $20, and $10, respectively, to fly from Dublin to Riga, then Riga to Brussels on Air Baltic, lol. and yeah, that's with this "shitty exchange rate that will kill you." Anyway, that's not a Dublin expense, this is:

1 kilo bing cherries = 18 Euro. o_O
Burger King value meal (Whopper Jr, fries, bev) = 8 Euro. o_O
1 pint Guinness in random Old town bar = 7 Euro o_O Yes, the same ho-hum Guinness that you can get in any bar, anywhere in the world. Thing is, 98% of the taps in that part of Dublin are Guinness draught, only. haha. The rest of Ireland is supposedly not as bad, though.

This is atypical of Europe. Usually, the prices in many tourist hubs end up being about equal even after factoring in the exchange rate. ($5 US prices are often 3-4 euro). Dublin is retarded expensive simply because if you were to switch the Euro sign with a dollar sign, it would still be expensive by US standards. I firmly believe that the Irish are intentionally pricing themselves into a 2nd famine.

Think about spending and exchange in these terms, you can see why PJW argument is misguided.

So, only the UK? no Europe?
:(

Unfortunately, no Europe on this trip. Talking more, it sounds like we may only do a day or two in Dublin (Ryan Air is crazy cheap!!), then head to Scotland and travel the coast over the course of a few days.

We will start and end in London... probably spending a couple days there when we first arrive, then several days when we finish (she has family there).

$1,500 ord-dub? Damn you overpaid. I made the trip 3 times and never paid more than $500 rt.
2 of the 3 times was over the thanksgiving holiday (wed-mon).

We usually pay 500-600RT from MSP to LONDON during the winters, summer tends to be 2-3x that price.

Watch out for baggage pricing on Ryan Air, they tend to add fee's along the way, to make up for the really cheap airfare.

Ryan Air is cheap...but those cheap air fare come with 0 guarantee and almost always require you to wait in a gigantic line at the ticket counter for 3 or more hours, to hope that the cheap fares will not sell out before you get them. it's great if that's the kind of travel you want (spend much of your time in an airport, pay for whatever is available, and just go where the plane takes you), but it sucks if you want to do any kind of planning in advance.

It tends to be the preferred carrier of students and such, simply b/c they have less of a definite schedule or destination in mind.

Interesting, good to know.

Since we won't be there long we would likely just do carry on. Maybe that would help?

yeah, I actually missed the much cheaper fare by ~1 week. :( It was Delta, iirc. The GF bought her ticket at ~$800, I snoozed and paid for it (I think it was actually $1200) This was mid-July, so certainly not the cheapest time to travel, either.

..and Wednesday/Monday are generally the cheapest days of the week for fare. Were you flying into Dublin? Thanksgiving isn't considered a big travel holiday in Europe b/c...you know...they don't care. ;) It might as well have been Arbor day on their calender.

yes indeed. Plenty of cheap carriers operating around Europe and not just Ryan Air. But they will kill you on checked baggage.
