Given the mobility constraints have you considered a train trip?

Fly from ERW to MDW on Southwest ($120ish) ----> CTA Orange Line from MDW to vicinity of Chicago Union Station ($2.25)---->Amtrak California Zephyr ($180ish a head for coach seats)-----> free bus connection from Emeryville to SF----> BART to SFO or OAK ($8)---->SFO or OAK to EWR ($150ish).

As a bonus you can hang out in Chicago and/or SF for a day to break things up. Just leave yourself at least a day in SF since the train is usually a number of hours late.

Total travel cost under $500 (not including possible SF hotel) and you get to see a huge part of the country.

The Silverton Train is probably the best train trip in the nation.

Plus, there are some really cool historical sites to see around Silverton and Durango.
