VA is going out of the hardware market to focus on consulting and software developement. They did say they will continue to support their hardware, etc... Sounds like a good deal to me... Hard to resist!

I've used their 1U server system and it's ok; however, we've since moved on to shipping DELL 1U servers, as they are cheaper and more compatible.

Note also that yesterday, VA Linux announced they will no longer be selling hardware as of July 10. Click here for their press release.

What it means is that there might be more firesales on their hardware coming up.

I wouldn't say this is as good a deal as the $450 Gateway server, though! (I bought one of those for home).

<< It has dual CPU MB, but at this price, you only get 1 U on it. >>

"only get 1 U on it"? HUH? 1U refers to the height of the rack mountable chassis.

The $800 includes 2 CPUs.

Perhaps today's financial news can shed some light on this.

VA Linux to Quit Its Hardware Business to Focus on Software Applications

Addled by a string of quarterly losses, open-source server maker VA Linux Systems (LNUX:Nasdaq - news - commentary) said Wednesday after the close of regular trading that it is abandoning its core hardware business to focus on the software applications market.

This is a MUCH better deal than the Gateway deal, but only
for a specialized market. This wipes the floor, pricewise,
with any other 1U rackmount dual processor server I know about.
This is an absolute steal.

In-frigging-credible. No other way to put it.

But this is ONLY of use to someone who needs a rack mounted
compute server. It ain't gonna cut it as anyone's desktop
replacement...No expansion to speak of...For the average person,
this isn't even close to as good a deal or as useful as the
Gateway server...

Oh, note that this is based on the 440GX platform, which means
it'll officially support up through dual 800Mhz processors. It
might allow you to use faster processors, depending on how the BIOS
is set up.

Sorry about my mistake about 1U, but now VA only allows me to select PIII 850, and one CPU will cost $1176.

PIII 750 already sold out?

Interesting note from the user's manual (p. 103):

"The VA Linux Systems 1000 can only support processor speeds up to 600 MHz, even though the BIOS settings can theoretically allow for faster speeds"

Anyone see any difficulties making this an NT box? Except for possibly losing VA Linux support.

Seems like a good deal to me...What OS comes standard on this? Can I use it to install Windows 2000 Advanced Server? Or are these specifically for Linux OSes? Also, where can I look to buy Rack Mounts...you know, those things that hold the Rack servers?

Thanks

These are based on a 440GX chipset motherboard. Shouldn't
be any problem installing Win2000, unless they have used
a weird video adaptor. But I would strongly doubt that.

This motherboard should support 800Mhz without any issues.
Faster processors will probably work, but may not be fully
supported (with respect to errata, etc.) by the BIOS.
Only 100Mhz FSB processors will work. 2GB memory maximum.

Does anyone know if Dell would Price Match this offer, say for one of their PowerEdge 1550 Rack Servers? Seems comparable to me...

What is Dell's Price Matching policy about this sort of stuff...if anyone knows?

Thanks!

It's a flaming hot deal, but unlike the gateway deal, people should only jump on this is they know they need it. That's probably why.

As I have noted, as have others, this is a MUCH HOTTER deal
than the Gateway server. HOWEVER, it is only hot for people
who have a specific use for a rack mounted server. There are a lot
of such people, but most of them are commercial/business/enterprise
clients, not personal users. C/B/E clients typically do not
do their aquisitions on the basis of posts to any "hot deals"
column. Hence the seeming lack of interest here.

As a matter of fact, one company I am involved with
recently purchased a couple
of full racks of VA Linux servers, and is contemplating another
rack or two at these firesale prices. They got word of the
sale long before it appeared on the Website, and the deals
they have access to are actually BETTER than the already blazingly
hot ones posted on the VALinux website. (The advantage of buying
in big numbers).
